drivers, 42 slate pickers, all men employed outside, 80 ; mules, 13 ; <strong>coal</strong><br />

mined during <strong>the</strong> year, 91,919.15 tons ; days worked, 91 ; powder used, 690<br />

kegs ; capacity <strong>of</strong> breaker, 450 tons per day.<br />

Slope No. 2 has been worked out, and is now used for pumping.<br />

Slope No. 3.— S^unk on <strong>the</strong> same vein and on <strong>the</strong> same dip, a distance <strong>of</strong><br />

708 feet, vertical 297 feet, average thickness 27 feet. The top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope<br />

is 1,521 feet above mid-tide, at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same 1,224 feet. A gangway<br />

is now being driven eastward under <strong>the</strong> slope in order to mine some<br />

<strong>coal</strong> which could not be worked heret<strong>of</strong>ore. They employ inside 1 boss,<br />

45 miners ; 54 laborers, 11 company men, 15 drivers, 3 door boys, total inside,<br />

129 ; outside 2 bosses, 5 mechanics, 5 head and plate men, 11 company<br />

men, 3 drivers, 51 slate pickers, total outside, 77 ; mules, 33 ; powder<br />

used, 770 kegs; number <strong>of</strong> days worked, 122-|.<br />

Ventilation.—This is eifected by <strong>the</strong> exhaust from <strong>the</strong> pump, 11,000 cubic<br />

feet <strong>of</strong> air per minute at face <strong>of</strong> gangway, and 25,000 cubic feet per minute<br />

at outlet; men employed, 108 ; air good.<br />

31achinery —They use 3 hoisting engines <strong>of</strong> r28-horse power, ] breaker<br />

engine <strong>of</strong> 24-horse power, and 2 steam pumps, (Allison's,) total number <strong>of</strong><br />

engines t, aggregate horse power 152.<br />

Lattimer Collieries.<br />

These collieries are situated about 3 miles north <strong>of</strong> Hazleton, on <strong>the</strong> estate<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black Creek Improvement Company'', and operated by Pardee<br />

Bros. & Co.<br />

Slope, No. 1 .—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> north dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 489 feet; vertical, 297 feet; thickness <strong>of</strong> vein about 30 feet.<br />

This slope has been sunk to <strong>the</strong> basin. The east gangway has been driven<br />

about 2,400 feet and <strong>the</strong> west 1,200 feet, which has been discontinued ;<br />

breasts working, 23 ; width <strong>of</strong>, 30 feet; width <strong>of</strong> pillar, 18 feet. A good<br />

traveling way has been made for men to travel to and from <strong>the</strong>ir work. They<br />

employ 1 boss, 53 miners, 9 laborers, 6 company men, 6 drivers, 1 door boy,<br />

in this slope ; outside, 1 boss, 2 mechanics, 2 head and plate men ; 12<br />

breaker men, 2 drivers and 50 slate pickers, in all 145 men and boys. They<br />

shipped 67,40(^0 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> from this slope, and used 928 kegs <strong>of</strong> powder,<br />

and worked 134 days. The breaker is calculated to prepare 800 tons <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>coal</strong> per day. «<br />

7,500 cubic<br />

Ventilation is produced by <strong>the</strong> exhaust steam from <strong>the</strong> pump ;<br />

feet per minute at face <strong>of</strong> gangway ; at outlet, 8,000 cubic feet per minute ;<br />

all men employed inside, 76. They have measured and reported according<br />

to law.<br />

Mackinery.—They have i hoisting engine <strong>of</strong> 100-horse power, 1 breaker<br />

have 14<br />

They engine <strong>of</strong> 25-horse power, 2 pumping engines <strong>of</strong> .<br />

boilers; have been cleaned, examined and reported safe and in good condition.<br />

They have steam gauges on <strong>the</strong>ir boilers and safety valve.<br />

Slope, No. 2— Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same vein as No. 1 a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 360 feet perpendicular depth, 297 feet. The east gangway has been<br />

driven across <strong>the</strong> basin, connecting with slope. No. 1, on <strong>the</strong> 'north, dip.<br />

The west gangway has been driven 4,500 feet. A locomotive engine hauls<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> from <strong>the</strong> turnout to <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope. The <strong>coal</strong> from <strong>the</strong><br />

counter is dumped into a shute and reloaded on <strong>the</strong> main gangway. The<br />

counter gangway has been driven about 450 feet; width <strong>of</strong> breast, about<br />

30 feet; width <strong>of</strong> pillar, I'i feet; thickness <strong>of</strong> vein, about 30 feet. They<br />

employ 1 boss, 46 miners, 13 laborers, 13 company men, 6 drivers, 2 door
