Ventilation.—This is produced by a 7-fect diameter fan at slope, No. T.<br />

There are good air-ways Sriven parallel with <strong>the</strong> g-angway. The breasts<br />

are not very satisfactory ventilated, owing to <strong>the</strong> one man-way system <strong>of</strong><br />

mining.<br />

Machinery.—They use 1 hoisting engines <strong>of</strong> SlO-horse power, 3 breaker<br />

engines <strong>of</strong> 60-horse power, 3 pumping engines <strong>of</strong> 180-horse power, 2 fan<br />

engines <strong>of</strong> 25-horse power; total number <strong>of</strong> engines, 15 ; aggregate horse<br />

power, 605.<br />

South Sugar Loaf Colliery.<br />

Located in llazle township, Pa., bounded on <strong>the</strong> east by Stockton and<br />

on <strong>the</strong> west by Ilazleton, on <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diamond <strong>coal</strong> company, and<br />

operated by A. Pardee & Co.<br />

Slope, No. 3.— Sunk on <strong>the</strong> north dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein, at an<br />

angle <strong>of</strong> 24° to 50° ; length <strong>of</strong> slope, 667 feet ; perpendicular depth, 382<br />

feet ; elevation above tide at tup <strong>of</strong> slope, 1,571 feet ; at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same, 1,189 feet. This slope connects in <strong>the</strong> Avest gangway hy an air-hole<br />

with <strong>the</strong> plane or counter-gangway, and also connects by ano<strong>the</strong>r air-hole,<br />

285 feet deep, with Sugar Loaf or No. 2 slope. This slope (No. 2) yields<br />

carburetted hydrogen gas, or fire-damp, but not to a great extent. These<br />

mines are well timbered wherever required, and great care is exercised for<br />

<strong>the</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men, and <strong>the</strong> mode <strong>of</strong> working is considered safe.<br />

Ventilation is produced by <strong>the</strong> steam exhaust from <strong>the</strong> pump ; tolerably<br />

ventilated, 10,000 cubic feet per minute circulating through <strong>the</strong> mines, per<br />

air report for November. Operatives, 96.<br />

Machinery.—They use 1 hoisting and pumping engine <strong>of</strong> 90-horse power,<br />

1 breaker engine <strong>of</strong> 25-horse power ; in all 2 engines <strong>of</strong> 115-horse power,<br />

and 8 steam boilers, cleaned, examined and reported safe and in good condition.<br />

Remarks.—They employ 1 boss, 63 miners, 20 laborers, 7 company men,<br />

4 drivers, 4 door boys, in <strong>the</strong> mines ; 1 boss, 5 mechanics, 33 breaker men,<br />

1 driver, 45 slate pickers ; in all 184 men and boys in and about <strong>the</strong> mines<br />

and 15 mules. They shipped (including Sugar Loaf) 68,430.05 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>,<br />

and used 840 kegs <strong>of</strong> powder ; worked 129j'o t^ays during year ending De-<br />

cember 31, 1875 ;<br />

breaker capacity, 500 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> per daj'.<br />

Sugar Loaf Colliery.<br />

Located in Ilazle township, on <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diamond Coal Company,<br />

and operated by A. Pardee & Co., and consists <strong>of</strong> 2 slopes and 1 breaker.<br />

Slope, No. 1.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein at angle<br />

<strong>of</strong> about 32° 36', and is 1,615 feet long; perpendicular depth, 870 feet;<br />

elevation above tide at top <strong>of</strong> slope, 1,619 feet ; at bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same, 749<br />

feet. This slope is being re-timbered preparatory to being re-worked.<br />

Sunk to basin.<br />

Slope, No. 2.— Sunk on <strong>the</strong> same dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same vein. Length <strong>of</strong> slope,<br />

1,188 feet; perpendicular depth, 659 feet; elevation above tide at top <strong>of</strong><br />

slope, 1,587 feet; at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same, 928 feet. This slope has<br />

been sunk 5 lifts. A tunnel on <strong>the</strong> east side has been droven, cutting <strong>the</strong><br />

big vein on <strong>the</strong> north dip. Connects with South Sugar Loaf, or No. 3
