No. 1. The cast gangwa5's are driven on <strong>the</strong> switch back sj^stem in order<br />

to overcome <strong>the</strong> pitch. There are numerous breasts in <strong>the</strong>se works, all <strong>of</strong><br />

which are in good working order. They shipped during <strong>the</strong> year ending<br />

December, 1875, 60,102.16 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>, and used 825 kegs <strong>of</strong> powder, and<br />

worked 128J days. They employ 1 boss, 76 miners, 3 laborers, 4 company<br />

men, 11 drivers, 4 door boys, in <strong>the</strong> mines ; 1 boss, 3 mechanics, 20 breaker<br />

men, 1 driver, 34 slate pickers, in all 158 men and boj^s and 30 mules, and<br />

a breaker capacity <strong>of</strong> 500 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> per day.<br />

Ventilation is produced by <strong>the</strong> exhaust steam <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pump, <strong>the</strong> slope<br />

being <strong>the</strong> intake and <strong>the</strong> pumpway <strong>the</strong> outlet ; ventilation, good; 14,175<br />

cubic feet at face <strong>of</strong> gangway per minute, per air report for November ;<br />

men employed, 100.<br />

Machinery.—They use 2 hoisting engines <strong>of</strong> 80-horse power, 1 breaker<br />

engine <strong>of</strong> 30-horse power ; total number <strong>of</strong> engines, 3 ; aggregate horse<br />

power, 110 ; and 4 steam pumps and 12 steam boilers, and 4 tubular boilers,<br />

which have been cleaned, examined and reported safe and* in good condition<br />

; also 2 steam boilers at Jeddo sawmill reported in good condition.<br />

Ebervale Collieries.<br />

These collieries are situated about four miles north-east <strong>of</strong> Hazleton, on<br />

<strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union improvement company, and operated by <strong>the</strong> Ebervale<br />

<strong>coal</strong> company.<br />

Slope, No. 1.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 820 feet, at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 30° ; vertical, 273 feet. This slope<br />

has been sunk to <strong>the</strong> basin. The east gangway has been driven 2,100 feet.<br />

There are two gangways on <strong>the</strong> east, one on each dip. Those gangways<br />

come toge<strong>the</strong>r at about — feet from <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope. This 'gang*<br />

way has been driven to <strong>the</strong> boundary line. The west gangway connects<br />

with No, 2 slope east gangway. A new traveling-way has lately been made<br />

for <strong>the</strong> men to travel to and from <strong>the</strong>ir work.<br />

Slope, No. 2.— Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same vein a distance <strong>of</strong> 853<br />

feet, at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 30° ; vertical, 284 feet This slope has been sunk<br />

to <strong>the</strong> basin. The basin dips from east to west. The difference <strong>of</strong> elevation<br />

between <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> No. 1 and No. 2 slopes is 20 .feet. The <strong>coal</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> west side <strong>of</strong> No. 3 counter is dumped into a shute and re-loaded<br />

on No. 1 slope gangway, and part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> on <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong> No. 3 is<br />

dumped into a shute and re-loaded on <strong>the</strong> west gangway <strong>of</strong> slope, No. 2.<br />

The <strong>coal</strong> from Nos. 1 and 2 slopes is prepared by <strong>the</strong> same breaker<br />

Slope, No. 3.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> north dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 915 feet; vertical, — feet; length <strong>of</strong> lirst lift, 365 feet; length <strong>of</strong><br />

second lift, 305 feet ; length <strong>of</strong> third lift, 245 feet to basin. The east gangway<br />

has been driven 3,900 feet to <strong>the</strong> boundary line, with 13 breasts working.<br />

Third lift, west gangway, has been driven 1,200 feet and <strong>the</strong> east<br />

gangway 2,400 feet, with 23 breasts working; width <strong>of</strong> breast, 30 feet;<br />

width <strong>of</strong> pillar, 18 feet; thickness <strong>of</strong> vein, 30 feet. There is an excellent ro<strong>of</strong><br />

in all <strong>the</strong> slopes, and <strong>the</strong> mines are well timbered to prevent <strong>the</strong> falling <strong>of</strong>.<br />

<strong>coal</strong>, rock, slate, &c. There are two large commodious breakers on <strong>the</strong><br />

property. They have breaker capacit}^ <strong>of</strong> 1,500 tons per day. They employ<br />

in all <strong>the</strong> mines 123 miners, 65 laborers, 9 drivers, — door boj^s, 41<br />

company men, in <strong>the</strong> mines; 5 bosses, 11 mechanics, 16<br />
