Slopk, No. 2.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 585 feet, at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 38^. Thickness <strong>of</strong> vein about 27<br />

feet. This slope has been sunk to <strong>the</strong> basin ; <strong>the</strong> synclinal dips from west<br />

to east. The east gangway has been driven 300 feet, and cannot be worked<br />

any I'ur<strong>the</strong>r at present owing to <strong>the</strong> old workings <strong>of</strong> Beaver Meadow being<br />

drowned, and <strong>the</strong>re being no map <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se old works to show M^iat pillar<br />

has been left The west gangway has been driven 1,300 feet, with 25<br />

breasts opened. There are 2 gangways on <strong>the</strong> west, 1 on each dip.<br />

Ventilation.— The ventilation is produced by <strong>the</strong> exhaust from <strong>the</strong> pumping<br />

engine. The air is good; 4,000 cubic feet at face <strong>of</strong> gangway; at<br />

men emploj^ed, 56.<br />

Si.opR, No. 4.—This is a nev\^ slope newly sunk on <strong>the</strong> Wharton or D<br />

outlet, 9,000 cubic feet ;<br />

vein. Length, 435 feet; vertical, 278 feet; angle, 40°. A new breaker<br />

is now being built to prepare <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> from <strong>the</strong> slope and drift. The ventilation<br />

in all <strong>the</strong> slopes is produced from <strong>the</strong> exliaust from <strong>the</strong> pump. There<br />

are 22,125 feet <strong>of</strong> T iron track and 11,100 feet f strap or wooden track in<br />

and about <strong>the</strong> mines, and 106 mine cars, 37 mules ; breaker capacity, 650<br />

tons per day. They mined in No. 2, during 143 days, 55,460 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>,<br />

and used 755 kegs <strong>of</strong> powder. Men and boys employed : inside, 80 ; outside,<br />

24 ; boys picking slate, 24. Number <strong>of</strong> days worked in all <strong>the</strong> slopes<br />

during <strong>the</strong> year, 279^. These mines have been very fortunate ; not an ac-<br />

•cident <strong>of</strong> any consequence occurred during <strong>the</strong> year, which speaks well for<br />

its management.<br />

Ilachinery consists <strong>of</strong> 3 hoisting engines <strong>of</strong> 150-horse power, 1 breaker<br />

engine <strong>of</strong> 30-horse power, 3 pumping engines <strong>of</strong> IGO-horse power ; total<br />

horse power, 240 ; total engines, 7, and are all in good condition.<br />

Jkaxesvills and Sprixg Mouxtaix Collieries.<br />

These collieries are situated 2 miles south <strong>of</strong> Ilazleton, on <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Spring Mountain Coal (lompany, and operated by J. C. Haydon & Co.<br />

Slope No. 1 .—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein, a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 601 feet, at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 22°, elevation above mean tide at<br />

top <strong>of</strong> slope feet, at bottom feet, perpendicular depth <strong>of</strong> slope 280<br />

feet. The west gangway has been driven 3,600 feet, and <strong>the</strong> east gangway<br />

3,200 feel, with several breasts. A tunnel 150 feet long has been driven,<br />

cutting <strong>the</strong> Wharton or D vein at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 20° on <strong>the</strong> north dip.<br />

The Mammoth vein is about 30 feet, and <strong>the</strong> Wharton about 9 feet thick,<br />

.and <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> is <strong>of</strong> very good quality.<br />

Slopk No. 4.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> tlie Mammotli or E vein, at an<br />

angle <strong>of</strong> about 31°, and is 566 feet long, perpendicular depth 283 feet, elevation<br />

above tide at top <strong>of</strong> slope feet, at bottom feet. The east<br />

gangway has been driven 1,407 feet, and ended in a fault, with 9 breasts<br />

working. They are driving an air-hole in this gangwaj'' which will increase<br />

<strong>the</strong> ventilation considerable. The east gangway, on <strong>the</strong> south dip, has<br />

been driven 1,310 feet, with 18 breasts working ; and <strong>the</strong> east gangway on<br />

<strong>the</strong> north dip 1,100 feet, with 2 breasts opening. This gangway has about<br />

200 feet to go to connect with <strong>the</strong> old No 4 slope workings. A tunnel has<br />

been started on <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope to cut <strong>the</strong> Wharton or D vein ou<br />

<strong>the</strong> ttoiih dip, and ano<strong>the</strong>r tunnel- is contemplated <strong>of</strong> being driven on <strong>the</strong>
