3Iachinery.— Tliey use 4 hoisting engines <strong>of</strong> 220-horse power, 2 breakerengines<br />

<strong>of</strong> 60-horse power, 4 pumping engines <strong>of</strong> 160-horse f)owcr, in all 10<br />

-engines <strong>of</strong> 440-liorse power, and 18 boilers, examined and reported in good<br />

and also 4 which have been ordered out to be repaired.<br />

Bemarks.—They employ 2 bosses, 81 miners, 53 laborers, 18 company<br />

men, 14 drivers, 5 door boys, in <strong>the</strong> mines; 2 bosses, 15 mechanics, 31<br />

breaker men, 9 drivers, 45 slate pickers, in all 275 men and boys in and<br />

about <strong>the</strong> mines. They shipped 54,900 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> during <strong>the</strong> year ending<br />

December 31, 1875, and used for mine purposes 9,075 tons. They used<br />

1,693 kegs <strong>of</strong> powder, and worked 239 J days, incliding both breakers.<br />

Capacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two breakers, 800 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> per day. They had 19,410<br />

feet <strong>of</strong> T iron track in and about <strong>the</strong> mines, with 84 mine cars and 34 mules.<br />

YoRKTOW-V Collieries.<br />

Situated three miles south <strong>of</strong> llazleton, on <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New York<br />

and Lehigh <strong>coal</strong> company, and operated by A. L, Mumper & Co.<br />

Slopes, Nos. 1, 2 and 4, as previously reported, are all abandoned, and<br />

are now drowned and <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> worked out.<br />

Slope, No. 5.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth or E vein a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 390 feet to <strong>the</strong> basin, at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 45° ; perpendicular<br />

depth, 276 feet. The basin dips from east to west. A new slope has been<br />

partly driven west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present slope in order to sink ano<strong>the</strong>r lift belov,<strong>the</strong><br />

No. 5 gangway. The east gangway has been driven to <strong>the</strong> boundary<br />

line, with 20 places worked ; consists chiefly in robbing pillars. The west<br />

gangway is driven quite a distance, and is about surmounting <strong>the</strong> anticlinal<br />

into <strong>the</strong> north dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same vein. A tunnel has been driven on <strong>the</strong> west<br />

side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope, cutting <strong>the</strong> Wharton or D vein on <strong>the</strong> south dip, and gangways<br />

turned olF east and west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tunnel. The east gangway has been<br />

driven 1,140 feet, with 35 breasts opened. The west gangway has been<br />

driven 1,320 feet, with 37 breasts opened. The vein is about 9 feet thick;<br />

<strong>coal</strong> very good quality. There are 105 mine cars, with a breaker capacity<br />

<strong>of</strong> 400 tons per day. A new breaker is now being built to take <strong>the</strong> place<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old one now abandoned. Men emploj-ed inside: boss, 1; miners,<br />

61; laborers, 36; company men, 37; drivers, 16; outside: boss, 1; mechanics,<br />

14 ; head and plate men, 16 ; all company men about <strong>the</strong> breaker,<br />

16 ; drivers, 2 ; slate pickers, 60 ; total number <strong>of</strong> men and boys employed,<br />

260; mules, 12; <strong>coal</strong> mined, 70,956 tons; powder used, 1,080 kegs; number<br />

<strong>of</strong> days worked, 139|.<br />

Ventilation is produced by means <strong>of</strong> exhaust steam from <strong>the</strong> Thatcher<br />

pump, <strong>the</strong> manway being <strong>the</strong> inlet and <strong>the</strong> pumpway <strong>the</strong> outlet. The air<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Big vein is favorable, but in <strong>the</strong> Wharton it has been very unsatisfactory.<br />

I have given orders to have <strong>the</strong> same improved forthwith. The<br />

following is <strong>the</strong> report <strong>of</strong> air measurements for month <strong>of</strong> December : Intake,<br />

11,000 cubic feet per minute; outlet, 12,000 cubic feet per minute;<br />

at ftice <strong>of</strong> gangway, 7,055 cubic feet ; men employed, 130.<br />

Machinery.—Thej use 1 hoisting engine <strong>of</strong> 00-horse power, 1 breaker<br />

engine <strong>of</strong> 30-horse power, 1 pumping engine <strong>of</strong> 100-horse power ; total number<br />

<strong>of</strong> engines, 3, <strong>of</strong> 19C -horse power, and 26 steam boilers, reported iii<br />

safe condition, and are examined every six months according to law.<br />

Jiemar/cs.—They have a second outlet ; <strong>the</strong>y have furnished <strong>the</strong> inspector<br />

with a map <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir workings ; <strong>the</strong>y have reported all serious accidents to<br />

persons, and <strong>the</strong> air is measured every week and reported monthly ; <strong>the</strong>y
