Racapitulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collieries <strong>of</strong> Shenandoah district, showing tlieir<br />

shipments, <strong>the</strong> power and force employed, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> fatal and nonfatal<br />

accidents that occurred during <strong>the</strong> year, to wit<br />

There are 41 slopes, 10 shafts and 48 drifts in operation, 1,470 breasts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>coal</strong> are worked, 271 steam engines with 548 steam boilers are in use, 43<br />

steam fans <strong>of</strong> 866-horse power are in use for ventilating <strong>the</strong> collieries ; 7,176<br />

men and 2,850 boys=10,026 hands are employed—868 mules and 3,297<br />

wagons are in use ; 26 fatal and 114 non-fatal accidents occurred, leaving<br />

11 widows and 49 orphans. 2,520, 179 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been sent to market,<br />

and 480,000 tons had been locally used, making an aggregate <strong>of</strong> 3,000,179<br />

making one fatal accident for every 116,319 tons mined,<br />
