Alaska (shaft) Colliery.— Operated by tlie P. and li. G. and 1. (Jo.<br />

The colliery is situated at Alaska Junction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shamokin and Mount<br />

Carmel Railroad, in Nortlnuuberland county. It consists ol a shaft opening-<br />

<strong>the</strong> E vein on its south dip <strong>of</strong> 10° in 20 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>. Mining operations<br />

are carried on by main and counter lifts. Ventilation is effected by <strong>the</strong> action<br />

<strong>of</strong> a powerful Grubal fan, located on an air shaft sunk to <strong>the</strong> anticlinal<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vein, a partitioned section <strong>of</strong> which has been used for men and mining-<br />

material In connection with this fan ano<strong>the</strong>r fan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beadle pattern<br />

is located at <strong>the</strong> main shaft for ventilating purposes. The general condition<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colliery and all its appointments are satisfactor3^ 20,925 ton.s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> have been mined, <strong>the</strong> engines=.385-horse power, with 10 good boil-<br />

ers, a No. T Cameron steam pump is used for drainage, and 255 hands areemployed.<br />

Bear Valley Colliery.— Operated by John E. liatlibun, on lands <strong>of</strong> Northumberland<br />

Goal Go., 3 miles west <strong>of</strong> Mount Garmel.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a drift opening <strong>the</strong> Lykene Valley vein in 7 feet <strong>of</strong> good<br />

<strong>coal</strong>, on a 20° south dip. Improvements are now under way for a more<br />

extended development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine <strong>the</strong> ensuing season. One engine, <strong>of</strong> 8horse<br />

power, with one l^oiler in use ;<br />

12 men are employed on <strong>the</strong> premises..<br />

BuRNSiDE Colliery.— Operated by May, Morgan tt- Go.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a double track slope sunk on <strong>the</strong> 9-feet vein, and sunk to<br />

<strong>the</strong> basin ; <strong>the</strong> seam is nearly flat ; mining in <strong>the</strong> lower or No. 8 vein is<br />

suspended. Ventilation is good, and is produced by a 20-horse power fan.<br />

Drainage is effected by a 14-inch pump ; 4 engines, <strong>of</strong> 180-horse<br />

with 11 boilers, and all <strong>the</strong>ir appointments are in good condition.<br />

slope is being sunk, intending to work <strong>the</strong> west basin. The opinion is that<br />

<strong>the</strong> colliery will ship a large amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> this season ; 118,000 tons <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>coal</strong> had been shipped in 1815 ;<br />

4 fatal accidents occurred during <strong>the</strong> year<br />

211 men and 90 boys are employed.<br />
