Upper Lehigh Collieries.<br />

Situated 11 miles north <strong>of</strong> Ilazleton, in Luzerne count}^, on <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Nescopec <strong>coal</strong> company and partl}^ on land belonging to <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong><br />

Tench Coxe, and operated by <strong>the</strong> Upper Lehigh <strong>coal</strong> company.<br />

Slope, No. 1.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buck Mountain or B vein,<br />

at an angle <strong>of</strong> about 24^°, a distance <strong>of</strong> 365 feet, vertical 181 feet. The<br />

top or mouth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope is 1,807 feet above mid-tide, and at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same 1,626 feet. The vein is about 12 feet thick, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> <strong>of</strong> superior<br />

quality. The east gangway has been driven 1,400 feet and <strong>the</strong> west<br />

gangway 5,460 feet, with 19 breasts working. Those breasts are opened<br />

36 feet wide, leaving a pillar <strong>of</strong> 18 feet for <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> superincumbant<br />

strata.<br />

Slope, No. 2.—Sunk on <strong>the</strong> same dip <strong>of</strong>. <strong>the</strong> same vein, at an angle <strong>of</strong><br />

about 32°, a distance <strong>of</strong> 455 feet. Elevation above mean tide at top <strong>of</strong><br />

slope, 1,787 feet ; at <strong>the</strong> bottom, 1,547 feet ; perpendicular depth <strong>of</strong> slope,<br />

240 feet. The east gangway has been driven 2,400 feet, with 13 breasts<br />

working, and <strong>the</strong> west gangway 4,600 feet, with 41 breasts working. There<br />

is a counter gangway about midway in <strong>the</strong> slope, and <strong>the</strong> hoisting from<br />

<strong>the</strong> bottom and <strong>the</strong> counter is done by having <strong>the</strong> hoisting drum <strong>of</strong> different<br />

diameter, and works to perfection. They have 49,094 feet <strong>of</strong> T iron track<br />

in and ab©ut Nos. 1 and 2 slope, and 187 mine car.^, with a breaker capacity<br />

<strong>of</strong> 800 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> per day. The one breaker prepares <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> from both<br />

slopes. They employ at <strong>the</strong> two slopes 2 bosses, 93 miners, 56 laborers,<br />

31 company men, &c., 11 drivers, 3 door boys in <strong>the</strong> mines, 10 mechanics, 4<br />

head and plate men, 8 breaker hands, 3 drivers, 64 slate pickers, in all 75<br />

men and boys and 51 mules. They shipped during <strong>the</strong> year ending December<br />

31, 1875, 114,812.18 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>, and used 1,882 kegs <strong>of</strong> mining powder,<br />

and worked 142 days.<br />

Ventilation.—This is produced by a 12-feet diameter ventilating fan.<br />

Whenever <strong>the</strong> fan gets out <strong>of</strong> repairs <strong>the</strong> mines arc ventilated by exhaust<br />

steam from <strong>the</strong> pump. The air is conducted to <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gangway bjmeans<br />

<strong>of</strong> bratticing along <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gangways, as <strong>the</strong> vein will not<br />

admit <strong>of</strong> an airway being driven in solid <strong>coal</strong> owing to <strong>the</strong> irregularity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>^pitch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vein, &c. They have doors wherever required, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own accord. The}' have a traveling way for men to travel<br />
