Vaughan Colliery.—David Vaughan S Co., Operators^ on land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P.<br />

and B. Goal and Iron Company.<br />

This is a small land-sale colliery, taking out <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> from <strong>the</strong> top level<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Pioneer. The <strong>coal</strong> is four feet thick. Six men are employed in<br />

mining and preparing <strong>coal</strong>.<br />

Excelsior Colliery.— C. W. Kingsley, Operator, on lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. and R.<br />

Coal and Iron Company<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> six drifts on <strong>the</strong> twin veins, Nos. 8 and 9. Drifts A and<br />

are on <strong>the</strong> No. 9 vein and B and D on No. 8 vein, while Nos. 1 and 2 are<br />

on 8 and 9 veins on <strong>the</strong>ir north and south dip. Four gangway's are open on<br />

Nos. 1 and 2 drilts, and worked as one vein in 20 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>. Ventilation<br />

is produced by natural means, and appears to be satisfactory. 43,463 tons<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been shipped this season, employing 120 men and 60 boys; 1<br />

breaker engine, <strong>of</strong> 65-horse power, with 6 boilers, are in use ; in condition<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are reported to bo good.<br />

Enterprise Colliery.— Thomas Baumgarden, Operator, on lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P.<br />

and B. Coal and Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a slope sunk 210 yards on <strong>the</strong> north dip, or No. 8 vein, into<br />

<strong>the</strong> basin. Both dips are worked. The basin ascends eastward in <strong>coal</strong> 8<br />

feet thick. It is anticipated <strong>the</strong> colliery will produce a large shipment in<br />

18T6, as all <strong>the</strong> necessary facilities for that end are being completed. Ventilation<br />

is produced by a 20-horse power fan, and fully adequate to furnish<br />

a full supply <strong>of</strong> air. 230-horse power and 13 good boilers are in use. The<br />

drainage is eftected by a 14-inch pole pump and a 10-inch Bannan & Allison<br />

pump. Two fatal accidents took place during <strong>the</strong> year. 52,665 tons<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined ; 160 men and 20 boys are employed ; <strong>the</strong> general<br />

condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colliery is good.<br />

Enterprise Colliery, No. 2.<br />

J. B. Cleaver, Operator, on lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P.<br />

and B. Coal and Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a small slope opening <strong>the</strong> Holmes vein on its south dip.<br />

Its western panel has been abandoned in a rock fault ; it is nearly exhausted<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> ; 54 hands had employment here ; 45-horse power engines, with 4<br />

boilers, are in use ; ventifetion is produced by a 10-horse power fan, and a<br />

6-inch pole pump is used for drainage.<br />

Brady Colliery.— Thomas Gorman, Operator, on lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. and B.<br />

Goal and Iron Company and <strong>the</strong> Lehigh Valley B. B. Co.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 4 drifts on <strong>the</strong> 8 and 9 and Skidmore veins. No. 8 is open<br />

in 5 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>. Both Nos. 8 and 9 veins are worked in <strong>the</strong> lower drift.<br />

It is connected with <strong>the</strong> Excelsior works eastwardly, and all ventilated by<br />

natural currents, but this system is to be superseded by a fan. 20,877 tons<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined this season, employing 70 men and 25 boys; 50horse<br />

power engine, with 5 boilers, are in use, with all <strong>the</strong>ir appointments<br />

are found to be in good condition.
