CHAPTER 3 – KEY PRIORITIES FOR <strong>TAFE</strong>WA FOR <strong>2006</strong><br />

The Minister for Education and Training identifi ed key priorities for <strong>TAFE</strong>WA Colleges <strong>2006</strong>, based on the state’s goals outlined in<br />

Better Planning: Better Services -Strategic Planning Framework for the <strong>Western</strong> Australian Public Sector in December 2003. These<br />

priorities for <strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> are:<br />

3.1 Increase Apprenticeships and Traineeships in conjunction with appropriate branches <strong>of</strong> the WA Department <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

and Training:<br />

• Link with Apprenticeships and Traineeship branch.<br />

• Link with Industry and Community Planning branch.<br />

• Link with VET Teaching and Learning branch.<br />

• Link with Career Development branch.<br />

<strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong>’s Targets<br />

Increase apprenticeships and traineeships from a base <strong>of</strong> 1,817 in the June quarter 2004 to 2,638 by June 2009, with an<br />

emphasis on apprenticeships in traditional trades in the initial years.<br />

3.2 Increase the number <strong>of</strong> Indigenous students enrolled in employment based outcomes (Certifi cate III and above) from a base<br />

<strong>of</strong> 206 in 2004 to 258 by 2009.<br />

• Link with Aboriginal Services branch.<br />

• Link with VET Teaching and Learning branch.<br />

3.3 Ensure all new and existing <strong>TAFE</strong>WA permanent and contract lecturers, as a minimum, hold a Certifi cate IV in Training and<br />

Assessment or equivalent.<br />

• Link with VET Teaching and Learning branch.<br />

<strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong>’s Target<br />

Fifteen existing lecturers not holding Certifi cate IV in Training and Assessment to be up-skilled by December <strong>2006</strong>.<br />

Other duties and priorities<br />

3.4 Work with the WA Department <strong>of</strong> Education and Training to assist in meeting other State Government training commitments.<br />

3.5 Provide strong leadership and effective governance by:<br />

• achieving level <strong>of</strong> expenditure consistent with estimates provided by College under section 42 <strong>of</strong> the Financial Administration<br />

and Audit Act 1985;<br />

• meeting DPA targets for effective delivery <strong>of</strong> training to students and industry; and<br />

• leading academic delivery to improve outcomes for students and increase student satisfaction rate by 1% in <strong>2006</strong>.
