Public recognition given to our students and staff <strong>of</strong> the WA Applied Engineering & Shipbuilding Training Centre:<br />

• A Workpac Engineering Scholarship for <strong>2006</strong> was awarded to Mr Brodie Smith (Mechanical Drafting);<br />

• A Workpac Engineering Scholarship for <strong>2006</strong> was awarded to Mr Earl Aguiar (Civil Engineering);<br />

• A Source Personnel Engineering Scholarship for <strong>2006</strong> was awarded to Mr Jacob Duncan (Mechanical Drafting);<br />

• Lecturer Mr Brian Jenkins from the Metals section Rockingham led the Metals team <strong>of</strong> mentors and competitors for the<br />

National World Skills Australia <strong>2006</strong> competition.<br />

<strong>2006</strong> Summary <strong>of</strong> Key Outcomes<br />

The Defence and Resources section focus has been in aligning with industry requirements and to this end the Centre has<br />

strengthened its industry partnerships. Some <strong>of</strong> the important outcomes for <strong>2006</strong> include:<br />

• Four employees <strong>of</strong> Austal Ships currently lecturing <strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> students and supporting apprentices are also undertaking a<br />

Certifi cate IV Training and Assessment qualifi cation.<br />

• Increased delivery <strong>of</strong> “Fast Track” apprenticeships to those who have been in the industry for some time and have no formal<br />

lecturer qualifi cations in the following: Metal Fabrication, Mechanical Fitting, and Marine Fit Out.<br />

• Identifi ed skills gaps and completed staff development in Numerical Control machining training for Fitting and Machining<br />

lecturers for increasing their skills in computer-controlled lathe or milling machine operation. This Lecturer Technical Skills<br />

Project formed part <strong>of</strong> a WA Department <strong>of</strong> Education and Training funded program.<br />

• VET for Schools and School Apprenticeship Link programs successfully run in the Metals areas, boosting employment<br />

outcomes in the region.<br />

• Phased approach to training delivery in ship construction using Ship Constructor technology, including the development <strong>of</strong><br />

computer assisted design based delivery.<br />

• A Junior Trade Assistant program was developed and conducted from Semester 2 for the Shipbuilding Industry.<br />

• Development <strong>of</strong> a Welding “up skilling” program initiative using fl exible delivery mode has been designed to allow shipbuilding<br />

industry existing workers to upgrade their skill to meet industry requirements.<br />

11.6 Construction & Transport<br />

In late <strong>2006</strong> the Defence and Resources portfolio was split so that Construction and Transport formed an additional division.<br />

Public recognition given to our students and staff<br />

• <strong>2006</strong> National WorldSkills Australia Gold Medal winner Mr Dale McMullen (Automotive Mechanics);<br />

• A Source Personnel Engineering Scholarship for <strong>2006</strong> was awarded to Mr Shane Carey (Electrical Drafting);<br />

• Lecturer Mr Shaun Holland from the Automotive section Fremantle mentored competitor Mr Dale McMullen (Automotive<br />

Mechanics) for the national World Skills Australia <strong>2006</strong> competition.<br />

<strong>2006</strong> Summary <strong>of</strong> Key Outcomes<br />

Construction and Transport looks forward to the completion <strong>of</strong> the Kwinana Automotive Training Centre to be located within the<br />

Kwinana Education Precinct. It will provide a training facility for students in 2008.<br />

• Three new Construction industry School Apprenticeship Links (SAL) programs were developed and delivered, producing<br />

excellent employments outcomes for the students and industry.<br />

• A new Bricklaying apprentice program provided industry with a fl exible day release model that provided for 600 additional hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> work availability for the 50 apprentices who were able to fast track their course. All <strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> Bricklaying apprentices<br />

fi nished their training in September and were able to return to full-time work, to assist in addressing worker shortages in the<br />

construction industry.<br />

• The Construction Business Unit completed the development <strong>of</strong> new skills assessment tools for Whole <strong>of</strong> Trade Assessment.<br />

These have now been integrated into all new commencing apprentice programs to formalise a fastracking process to allow<br />

students in the construction trade areas to fi nish their training more quickly and return to full-time work, and so assist in<br />

addressing worker shortages in the construction industry.
