Mr Kim Bailey (Deputy Chair) retired from Governing Council and the Finance Performance and Audit Committee in June<br />

<strong>2006</strong> but has maintained his connection with the WA Horticulture and Environmental Science Skills Centre Industry Advisory<br />

Committee. Kim was a founding member <strong>of</strong> Governing Council. He has close to 45 years <strong>of</strong> experience in the family business,<br />

Bailey’s Fertilisers, and in the fi eld <strong>of</strong> horticulture. He is a resident <strong>of</strong> the College region and a former Rockingham City Councillor.<br />

He is also the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Turf and Landscape Industry Associations Industry Board.<br />

Term <strong>of</strong> Appointment: 19/01/04 – 30/06/06<br />

Commodore Mike Deeks CSC, RAN (Ret’d) BA MMgmt FAICD<br />

Commodore Deeks served for 32 years in the Royal Australian Navy, retiring in 2005. Service included command <strong>of</strong> three<br />

submarines and the Fleet Replenishment ship, HMAS Success. Awards include the Conspicuous Service Cross for service as the<br />

Submarine Group Commander and Senior Naval Offi cer, WA and the Australian Service Medal with Submarine<br />

Operations clasp.<br />

He is Vice Patron <strong>of</strong> the Australian American Association <strong>of</strong> WA, a Councillor <strong>of</strong> the Royal United Services Institute <strong>of</strong> WA, a<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> the Leeuwin Ocean Adventures Foundation and former President and current Board member <strong>of</strong> the Submarine<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Australia. Since retiring from the Navy, he has been appointed Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Nautronix Ltd, a Fremantle<br />

based company involved in underwater technology. He is also working with the WA Government to develop WA-based defence<br />

industry. Commodore Deeks interests include ocean yacht racing, scuba diving, kayaking and reading. He has completed<br />

numerous <strong>of</strong>fshore yacht races including four Sydney to Hobart Races.<br />

Ms Tonya Batalin<br />

Tonya has worked in a variety <strong>of</strong> positions around the world including two years in Monte Carlo, fi ve years in Hong Kong / China,<br />

and eight years in NSW / Victoria. She has a Law Degree from the University <strong>of</strong> WA, Postgraduate Diploma in Management from<br />

the United Kingdom and fund raising certifi cation from the Fund raising Institute <strong>of</strong> Australia. With over 20 years experience in a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> different positions including the Australian Ballet Company, Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation and the Fremantle<br />

Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce, Tonya has extensive experience in marketing, donor/sponsor management and strategic planning. She<br />

has a passion for education, training and youth development.<br />

Ms Melinda Bolt<br />

Melinda is the Community Relations Manager at Alcoa World Alumina Australia’s Pinjarra refi nery in <strong>Western</strong> Australia. Alcoa<br />

is the largest alumina producer in the world, and Pinjarra is one <strong>of</strong> the largest refi neries in the world. Melinda commenced her<br />

career with Alcoa World Alumina Australia in 2001. During this time she achieved effective results in dealing with the community,<br />

government and media in the Peel region.<br />

Prior to joining Alcoa, Melinda worked as a Visitor Interpretation specialist for the Department <strong>of</strong> CALM coordinating community<br />

workshops and delivery training sessions for tour operators, fi shermen and staff to enhance the community education and<br />

interpretation program <strong>of</strong> the CALM managed estate and the Shark Bay World Heritage Property.<br />

Melinda has a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts in Public Relations and Media Studies, Edith Cowan University 1994 and was nominated as WA<br />

Public Relations Student <strong>of</strong> the Year. She has also completed Certifi cate IV in Management, The Effective Manager, The Open<br />

University, South Metropolitan College <strong>of</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> 2000. Amongst her interests Melinda includes swimming, cycling, touch football,<br />

hockey and foster caring.<br />
