Youth outcomes<br />

• A partnership between Kwinana Industries Education Partnership, Uniting Care West and South Coastal Women’s Health<br />

Services designed developed and delivered the Rockingham Educating Young Parents Program. The program extends for three<br />

years and its objectives are to assist young parents, primarily mothers and pregnant teenagers in the Rockingham area who<br />

have left school. The program also provides stimulating childcare for the children <strong>of</strong> the young parents as they participate in<br />

the project.<br />

• A survey <strong>of</strong> all students enrolled in Youth at Risk Gaining Access to Training and Employment courses conducted by <strong>Challenger</strong><br />

<strong>TAFE</strong> in Semester One <strong>2006</strong>. The following data helped the College to design a more tailored program for Semester 2.<br />

Features <strong>of</strong> the survey included: 75% <strong>of</strong> the 35 young people surveyed were aged sixteen years or younger. Of this cohort 43%<br />

were in a high-risk category, experiencing drug dependency, homelessness, psychiatric and/or learning disorders. Despite<br />

these challenges, 70% <strong>of</strong> the young people successfully completed the program in Semester One, thereby gaining their Year<br />

10 equivalency. Of the remaining students who did not complete, 36% returned to school, one student entered full time<br />

employment and 20% re-enrolled in GATE for Semester Two. Three quarters <strong>of</strong> the participants were contactable within 10<br />

weeks <strong>of</strong> the course completion, and <strong>of</strong> these, all had achieved a successful outcome and had moved into education, training<br />

or employment.<br />

• <strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> formed partnerships with local schools and District Education <strong>of</strong>fi ces to <strong>of</strong>fer programs designed to cater for<br />

the needs <strong>of</strong> disengaged youth <strong>of</strong> the region. The courses were well subscribed to at Rockingham, Peel and Kwinana<br />

<strong>TAFE</strong> campuses.<br />

• In Semester Two at the Peel Education and <strong>TAFE</strong> Campus, a new Certifi cate in General Education for Adults was trialled with<br />

young people as the target group. The program included training delivered <strong>of</strong>f campus and partnerships were formed with local<br />

youth organisations eg PCYC and Castlerock Institute for Music, to provide exciting material for the young students.<br />

12.3 Advertising and Sponsorship (Electoral Act 1907 S175ZE)<br />

<strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> paid $393,305.67 to Media Decisions, a division <strong>of</strong> Marketforce Advertising and paid Marketforce $50,467.82 for<br />

advertising purposes during <strong>2006</strong>. This amount included $27,902.02 for advertising for recruitment purposes.<br />

12.4 Equal Employment Opportunities<br />

Under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, <strong>Challenger</strong> <strong>TAFE</strong> has complied with the requirement to develop and implement an<br />

Equal Employment Opportunity Management Plan. The development and endorsement <strong>of</strong> a new Staff Equity and Diversity Plan<br />

occurred in <strong>2006</strong>, for the period 2007-2009. The College has an active and ongoing commitment to greater representation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Indigenous Australians, people with disabilities, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women in<br />

management and youth within the College.<br />
