Because of wide variations in personal living costs among a diverse student<br />

population, the <strong>Seminary</strong> shares primarily tuition expense with students qualifying<br />

for need-based financial assistance. The <strong>Seminary</strong>’s capacity to assist with<br />

noneducational expenses is limited to subsidizing the costs of housing and meals<br />

in the dining hall. Financial assistance is offered to full-time Master of Arts in<br />

<strong>Theological</strong> Studies students and both full-time and part-time Master of Divinity<br />

students. The fi nancial aid resources of the <strong>Seminary</strong> are applied according to the<br />

following plan on a year-to-year basis, and then, ordinarily, solely on the basis of<br />

demonstrated need. The publication Student Financial Assistance Program Policies<br />

and Procedures, available from the fi nancial aid offi ce, contains<br />

1. Grants: Master of Arts in <strong>Theological</strong> Studies and Master of Divinity<br />

students may, by demonstrating need, and by meeting satisfactory academic<br />

progress, qualify for an outright grant-in-aid from the <strong>Seminary</strong>, subject<br />

to availability of funds. Grants offered through the <strong>Presbyterian</strong> Church<br />

(U.S.A.) Offi ce of Financial Aid for Studies provide limited supplemental<br />

assistance for Master of Divinity students who are <strong>Presbyterian</strong> inquirers<br />

or candidates under care of a presbytery. These grants are also available to<br />

Master of Arts in <strong>Theological</strong> Studies students planning to take a position<br />

within the PC(USA) or one of the ecumenical agencies in which the<br />

PC(USA) participates. Application is made through the <strong>Seminary</strong>’s Offi ce<br />

of Financial Aid.<br />

2. Racial Ethnic Leadership Supplemental Grants: Awards offered through<br />

the <strong>Presbyterian</strong> Church (U.S.A.) Offi ce of Financial Aid for Studies<br />

provide limited supplemental assistance for racial ethnic students who are<br />

<strong>Presbyterian</strong> inquirers or candidates under care of a presbytery. Application<br />

is made through the <strong>Seminary</strong>’s Offi ce of Financial Aid.<br />

3. Long-Term Loans: Extended-term loans are available at reasonable rates of<br />

interest to degree candidates from the <strong>Presbyterian</strong> Church (U.S.A.) and the<br />

Federal Stafford Student Loan Program. Application is made through the<br />

<strong>Seminary</strong>’s Offi ce of Financial Aid and takes approximately three weeks.<br />

4, Short-Term Loans: Loans to meet unanticipated needs are available to<br />

students through the Student Loan Fund administered by the vice president<br />

for student affairs. Students should be aware that loans from this source are<br />

due and payable upon separation from <strong>Austin</strong> <strong>Seminary</strong> and prior to the<br />

awarding of a degree or issuance of a transcript.<br />

5. Emergency Grants: In cases of emergency, grants may be awarded from<br />

the Emergency Aid Fund administered by the vice president for student<br />

affairs.<br />

6. Jean Brown Scholarships: These academic scholarships are available to<br />

qualifi ed MDiv students. (Refer to The Jean Brown Scholarships below.)<br />

7. Presidential Scholarships: These scholarships are available to qualifi ed MDiv<br />

students. (Refer to Presidential Scholarships in this section.)<br />

8. Child Care Assistance: Limited funds are available to full-time students to<br />

help offset the costs of child care. Application is made through the <strong>Seminary</strong>’s<br />

Offi ce of Financial Aid.<br />

9. <strong>Seminary</strong> <strong>Book</strong> Scholarship: Based on fi nancial need, limited funds are<br />

available each year in the fall and springs term to full-time degree students.<br />

The maximum award is $100 per student.<br />
