as participant-observation of congregational and seminary liturgies, workshop exercises in<br />

liturgical roles, and on-site investigation of art and environment for worship. Prerequisite:<br />

CM.122 or instructor’s permission. Six credits.<br />

CM.271 PREACHING AND THE REVISED COMMON LECTIONARY<br />

Students investigate the relationship between lectionary preaching and celebration of the<br />

sacraments in the ongoing life of the worshiping assembly. Attention is given to how the<br />

readings of the day interact with each other and relate to the church’s calendar, and the<br />

homiletical issues involved. Hermeneutical assumptions are explored throughout the course.<br />

Prerequisites: CM.122 and CM.126. Six credits. Ms. Lord<br />

CM.273 SPEECH COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP<br />

This course helps students to develop and practice skills in public address and interpretive<br />

speech appropriate to Christian ministry. Attention is given to the mechanics of effective<br />

sermon delivery and extemporaneous speech and prayer. Students prepare and present assigned<br />

readings from poetry and Scripture. Sermons are written and preached. Prerequisites: CM.122<br />

and CM.126. Three credits. Ms. Lord<br />

CM.281 LITURGICAL YEAR: EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN<br />

The substance of this course is worship and proclamation in the patterns and rhythms of<br />

the liturgical year of the Church, historically and in the present. The focus of the course is<br />

the proclamation of the Gospel in time, over time and by the keeping of time. The purpose,<br />

theology and use of the Common Lectionary in worship and preaching are central to the work<br />

of the course. Participants engage in planning and preparation for worship and preaching in<br />

the life of the congregation. Six credits.<br />

CM.283 WORKSHOP IN LITURGICAL MINISTRY: SUNDAY AND SACRAMENTS<br />

This course helps students develop and enhance their skills in planning corporate worship and<br />

presiding at the principal services of worship of a congregation. Working as part of a planning<br />

team, students plan, lead, and critique services based on the <strong>Book</strong> of Common Worship (1993),<br />

or equivalent liturgical resources of the student’s denomination. The Sunday liturgy, the service<br />

for baptism and for the eucharist are studied, with attention to the leading of prayer, public<br />
