Basic Dues<br />

Unless stipulated below, all members receive full membership benefits and<br />

the prices listed cover <strong>on</strong>e membership year. ACTFL memberships are NOT<br />

transferable.<br />

Regular Membership<br />

Individuals currently employed in foreign language educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Price: $75 (<strong>on</strong>e year), $140 (two years), $201 (three years)<br />

Adjunct/Part-Time Educators<br />

Individuals spending less than 50% <strong>of</strong> their total employment or less than<br />

20 hours a week instructing or administering languages.<br />

Price: $50<br />

New Teacher Membership<br />

Individuals currently employed within the first two years <strong>of</strong> their first<br />

teaching c<strong>on</strong>tract, for a maximum <strong>of</strong> two years.<br />

Price: $50<br />

Student Membership<br />

Individuals currently enrolled in a language and/or teacher training degree<br />

program or state recognized teacher certificati<strong>on</strong> program. Eligible for<br />

length <strong>of</strong> studies, must provide expected completi<strong>on</strong> date.<br />

Price: $25<br />

Multi-Year Membership and Fees<br />

Only regular members may join for multiple years at a discount. All<br />

other categories may join for multiple years by multiplying the dues<br />

amount by the number <strong>of</strong> years wishing to join.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>al Fees<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al Fee<br />

Required for all n<strong>on</strong>-U.S. mailing addresses. Fee is per year for each year<br />

<strong>of</strong> membership.<br />

Price: $20/year<br />

Joint Membership Fee<br />

Provides membership benefits for a sec<strong>on</strong>d family member or domestic partner<br />

residing at the same home address as another ACTFL member. Joint members<br />

receive <strong>on</strong>e set <strong>of</strong> publicati<strong>on</strong>s, but duplicates <strong>of</strong> all other member benefits.<br />

ACTFL’s sustained public awareness campaign<br />

to build understanding am<strong>on</strong>g the public,<br />

the business community, and the government<br />

<strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> learning languages. Efforts<br />

such as this will lead to increased funding<br />

for language programs, expanded language programs, increased cultural<br />

understanding, and increased job opportunities for language educators.<br />

Special Interest Groups<br />

Opti<strong>on</strong>al – additi<strong>on</strong>al fee required<br />

ACTFL members are eligible for <strong>on</strong>e FREE Special Interest Group (SIG)<br />

membership. Additi<strong>on</strong>al SIG memberships are $5/year per SIG.<br />

Multi-year members should multiply each SIG fee accordingly. (For<br />

example: add $10 per SIG if you are registering for a two-year ACTFL<br />

membership plan.)<br />

Price: $5/year per SIG<br />

Special Interest Groups<br />

African-<str<strong>on</strong>g>American</str<strong>on</strong>g> Students – provides a public forum for the discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> issues relating to African-<str<strong>on</strong>g>American</str<strong>on</strong>g> students and their needs as language<br />

learners.<br />

Arabic – serves as a network for communicati<strong>on</strong> and informati<strong>on</strong> sharing<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g Arabic language and culture instructors.<br />

Community Colleges – provides leadership and cohesiveness to the teaching<br />

<strong>of</strong> foreign languages at the community college level.<br />

Distance Learning – provides a forum for the discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> strategies, program<br />

models, and the many challenges facing distance learning educators.<br />

Film (Cinema) – seeks to resp<strong>on</strong>d to the increasing interest in and use <strong>of</strong><br />

films in language instructi<strong>on</strong>, acquisiti<strong>on</strong>, and assessment.<br />

Heritage Languages – represents the c<strong>on</strong>cerns <strong>of</strong> the heritage languages<br />

teaching community and provides them a network for communicati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Immersi<strong>on</strong> – expands opportunities for dialogue, informati<strong>on</strong> exchange,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al development, and research initiatives am<strong>on</strong>g dual language/<br />

immersi<strong>on</strong> educators.<br />

Korean – provides a forum for discussi<strong>on</strong> about teaching Korean and<br />

provides teachers an active networking system.<br />

Language Learning for Children (LLC) – promotes and supports early language<br />

programs in the U.S. through advocacy, networking, and articulati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Less Comm<strong>on</strong>ly Taught Languages (LCTLs) – promotes knowledge and<br />

awareness about LCTLs and provides a forum for teachers to discuss learning<br />

needs, best practices, and policy developments.<br />

Modern Greek – provides a forum for the Modern Greek language and<br />

culture teaching community.<br />

Portuguese – promotes and supports Portuguese programs in the U.S.<br />

through advocacy, networking, and articulati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Research – highlights the importance <strong>of</strong> the research process am<strong>on</strong>g the<br />

ACTFL membership, while also providing a forum at the ACTFL C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong><br />

for the discussi<strong>on</strong> and presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> research pieces.<br />

Small German Programs – promotes discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the issues and opportunities<br />

surrounding small German programs at colleges and universities.<br />

Spanish for Native Speakers (SNS) – c<strong>on</strong>cerned with the teaching and learning<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spanish for individuals who have a home background in the language.<br />

Teacher Development – provides a forum for the discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> foreign<br />

language teacher preparati<strong>on</strong>, both at the preservice and in-service levels.<br />

<strong>Teaching</strong> and Learning <strong>of</strong> Culture – encourages a better understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

the teaching <strong>of</strong> culture and its place in the foreign language curriculum.<br />
