ACTFL Opening General Session
Please join us for this opening event of the 2012 ACTFL Annual Convention where ACTFL President Dave
McAlpine will welcome attendees and honor the 2013 winner of the ACTFL National Language Teacher of

Keynote speaker Dr. K. David Harrison is currently serving as a professor of linguistics at Swarthmore
College and has completed extensive research on language extinction. He also co-founded and serves as
Director of Research for the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages, a non-profit foundation
that strives to advocate for the documentation, preservation, and revitalization of endangered languages.
Dr. Harrison has published numerous books on the subject and was highlighted in a documentary called The Linguists, which
featured hands-on linguistic field work from around the world. After his opening address, Dr. Harrison will be signing two of
his recent books.
