ACTFL Opening General Sessi<strong>on</strong><br />
Please join us for this opening event <strong>of</strong> the 2012 ACTFL Annual C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> where ACTFL President Dave<br />
McAlpine will welcome attendees and h<strong>on</strong>or the 2013 winner <strong>of</strong> the ACTFL Nati<strong>on</strong>al Language Teacher <strong>of</strong><br />
the Year. This award is sp<strong>on</strong>sored by EMC/Paradigm Publishing, Hought<strong>on</strong> Mifflin Harcourt/Holt McDougal,<br />
Pears<strong>on</strong> Prentice Hall, and Vista Higher Learning.<br />
Keynote speaker Dr. K. David Harris<strong>on</strong> is currently serving as a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> linguistics at Swarthmore<br />
College and has completed extensive research <strong>on</strong> language extincti<strong>on</strong>. He also co-founded and serves as<br />
Director <strong>of</strong> Research for the Living T<strong>on</strong>gues Institute for Endangered Languages, a n<strong>on</strong>-pr<strong>of</strong>it foundati<strong>on</strong><br />
that strives to advocate for the documentati<strong>on</strong>, preservati<strong>on</strong>, and revitalizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> endangered languages.<br />
Dr. Harris<strong>on</strong> has published numerous books <strong>on</strong> the subject and was highlighted in a documentary called <strong>The</strong> Linguists, which<br />
featured hands-<strong>on</strong> linguistic field work from around the world. After his opening address, Dr. Harris<strong>on</strong> will be signing two <strong>of</strong><br />
his recent books.<br />
