4. Conclusions<br />
A numerical analysis <strong>of</strong> double edge defects in rectangular plates in tension (Figure 1) was performed, <strong>and</strong><br />
the stress intensity factors calculated for a variety <strong>of</strong> values <strong>of</strong> the geometric parameters. By comparing<br />
the calculated SIFs for the three geometries, it was found that the presence <strong>of</strong> an indentation at the base<br />
<strong>of</strong> the crack has a shielding effect, lowering the SIF. The effect is more pronounced when the indentation<br />
is a half-circle than when it is a half-square notch. The shielding effect gradually decreases with the size<br />
<strong>of</strong> the indentation; When the characteristic size (depth) <strong>of</strong> the indentation is less than the length <strong>of</strong> the<br />
crack proper (that is, the ratio a/R or a/c in Figure 1 exceeds 2), the effect becomes negligible.<br />
This study illustrates how the displacement discontinuity method with crack-tip elements can be <strong>of</strong><br />
value in calculating SIFs for complex crack problems in<strong>vol</strong>ving a finite plate.<br />
