About the Plaza Mayor of the 21 st Century
From the end of the 18th century, the time in which
they finished the works of construction of the Plaza
Mayor in Salamanca, this space has been the neuralgic
centre of our city. In it all kinds of events have been
celebrated, from markets to acts justice, and the
principal streets of the city depart from it. Our square
has been a witness, throughout the centuries, of the
principal events of the history of the city, and has
become the heart of Salamanca: a place of intersection
of multiple paths, a place to arrange an appointment and
pass through on our way, an obligatory visit for all
tourists, a place for international summits, holidays
(parties), bullfights …
In 2005, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the
Main Square. Architects all over the world thought
about the public space of the square and its
surroundings, proposing suggestions, perspectives and
invitations to enter the Plaza Mayor of the 21st century,
with a new look: "Emptinesses of light, the Main
Beach, Main Stadium, 250 Stars, Ephemeral Plots,
Emptying the Emptiness…", are examples of some of
these reflections. We can penetrate into these ideas and
more in the book, "SALAMANCA. SIGLO XXI.
PLAZA MAYOR".
"…The President of the United States travels to
Salamanca to give a speech in a conference. In the
middle of the political meeting, someone tries to
commit an outrage right at this moment, against his life.
The history is told through the eyes of eight persons
who were there at the time. Eight points of view, each
one with a different version of the only truth. What
really happened? ". This is the plot of the movie "
VANTAGE POINT ", a recently released American
movie, which has its principal scene in a replica of the
Plaza Mayor of Salamanca, set up in a film studio of
Mexico. Another demonstration of the Plaza Mayor as
a stage of events.
In conclusion, I would say that thronghot time places
pass through different phases to then be reinvented .
This is the case of our Plaza Mayor. As the centuries
have passed by in Salamanca, we have experimented
different visions of this stage, which adapts and evolves
with time just as a living organism does, to the cultural,
social and temporary changes.
