The following article is a reflection on the challenges that arise for teachers
working in Canadian French-language schools, outside of Quebec. By making direct
reference to the prevailing situation in Ontario, the problem of teaching within a
minority francophone milieu is approached from two specific angles : the role of
the school as an agent of linguistic and cultural reproduction and the place of the
teaching staff in this process, as well as the differentiation confronted by teaching
staff in their everyday work. With respect to this differentiation, the article specifically
focuses on the fragmentation of languages and cultures, which are increasing in
Franco-Ontarian schools, and the ways in which teachers are coming to terms with
this new reality. This reflection is based on discussions with teachers who participated
in three studies carried out recently in Ontario. These studies mainly looked
at the ways in which these teachers view their work, as well as their needs and the
support measures they should be provided with in their everyday work. Some of
these measures are examined in the last section of the article.
