La profession enseignante en France :
permanence et éclatement
stabilité des pratiques et des identités professionnelles, vite assimilée à l’immobilisme
conditions d’exercice bouleversées, ses missions redéfinies.
ABSTRACT
The Teaching Profession in France : Permanence and Rupture
Vincent LANG
France
This article first reviews the sociographic characteristics of the teaching corps in
France and the principle transformations within the educational system and in the
societal context of professional practice. The author then looks at the evolution of
recruitment conditions and transformations in early training for the profession,
examining what they question in terms of prior status and professionalism. Studies
may show stability, at a general level, in professional practices, but ethnographic
approaches reveal the complexity of adaptations to local conditions and the diversity
of professional mobilizations. If there is permanence in the teaching profession, a
rupture can also be seen in the postulated unity of the teaching force, accompanied
by a reworking of the profession’s direction, in which temporality is lagging with
respect to transformations in teaching and the expectations of the institution.
Who are the teachers in France today? Heirs to a long tradition, do they carry on
the professional culture and values that made up their social constitution in the past?
The development of long academic careers, changes of an educated public, transformations
in social life, living conditions, access to information, and uncertainty with
respect to educational values have necessarily had their effects on the profession and
ways of practicing it. The article essentially questions how to understand an obvious
stability in professional practice and identity, hastily compared to the immobility of
a protected group, while this same group has seen its composition transformed,
entry requirements completely changed, and its goals redefined.
