SUMMARY
Instructions on the use of a new software, named
ICMeasy, are provided for the purpose of correctly
calculating Intercalibration Common Metrics (ICMs)
and Indices (ICMi) for European rivers based on
aquatic invertebrate information. All the
Geographical Intercalibration Groups (GIGs) defined
for the Water Framework Directive Intercalibration
process are considered. Starting from a txt input file,
the software is able to calculate ICMs and ICMi
based on: invertebrate families found at a site; a
quality classification of the samples (at least for
those in High status or collected from Reference
sites). The software always calculates a standard
set of IC metrics (STAR_ICMs) and the derivative
index (STAR_ICMi). In combination with
STAR_ICMs and index, in formal use in the
Central/Baltic, Mediterranean and Nordic GIGs, an
additional set of metrics and index can be calculated
according to the GIG area that samples were
collected in. Mediterranean, Alpine and
Eastern/Continental sets of IC metrics and IC
indices, as they were finally defined for the formal IC
process, can also be calculated. In addition, the
software accepts data for pressures, National
methods or environmental variables for direct
comparison with IC indices, via linear regression
analysis. In the output file, single metrics and indices
values are provided, together with summary
information on data used and regression analysis.
All the information needed to make calculations and
use ICMeasy is supplied.
Common Metrics (ICMs) and Indices (ICMi). Tutti i
Notiziario dei Metodi Analitici
101
n. 1 (2007)
Riferimento o considerati in Stato Elevato). Il
software calcola automaticamente una lista standard
di metriche dell’Intercalibrazione (STAR_ICMs) e
l’indice da esse derivato (STAR_ICMi), in uso come
metodo ufficiale nei GIG Centrale/Baltico,
Mediterraneo e Nordico. In combinazione con le
STAR_ICMs a lo STAR_ICMi, possono anche
essere calcolate le metriche IC ufficiali dei GIG
Alpino e Eastern/Continental e i relativi indici, in
accordo con il GIG di appartenenza. Inoltre, il
software è in grado di gestire dati su pressioni,
metodi nazionali o relativi a variabili ambientali per
effettuare un confronto diretto con gli indici
dell’Intercalibrazione mediante analisi di regressione
lineare.
INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STRUCTURE
OF THE SOFTWARE
The scientific context of the Intercalibration Common
Metric (ICM) approach and its general relevance to
the European Water Framework Directive (WFD)
Intercalibration process has been explained
elsewhere (Buffagni et al., 2005; 2007; Buffagni &
Furse, 2006; Furse et al., 2006a; 2006b). The need
for a calculation tool able to correctly compute ICMs
and indices, based appropriately on the founding
principles of the ICM approach (Buffagni et al., 2005;
2006), is being emphasized elsewhere (Buffagni &
Belfiore, in preparation). The REBECCA project
(Rekolainen, 2005), the context of which ICMeasy
was developed (Buffagni & Belfiore, op. cit.),
focuses on defining relationships between biological
elements and pressures in the context of the WFD. It
also aims at providing validation for some of the
scientific assumptions currently proposed in the
implementation of the WFD, including the IC metrics
and indices approach to describe pressure
gradients. The conceptual basis of the ICMeasy
software structure can be found in Buffagni &
Belfiore (in preparation). In this paper, the aim is to
provide end-users with the necessary information to
correctly make calculations and use ICMeasy.
