Messere!... ho già varcati
I tre lustri... sapete?
Salvatore - Io l’ignorava.
Perdono!...
Gennariello - Udir vi piace
La canzonetta ch’io per lei composi?
Salvatore - Per chi?
Gennariello - Per lei - non basta?
Salvatore - (rimettendosi a sedere presso al quadro)
Da bravo! Udiam! La tela mia frattanto
Ravviverò.
Gennariello - Vi ispirerà il mio canto:
(leva dal tavolo un mandolino e canta
accompagnandosi)
3 Mia pêccêrella, deh! vieni allo mare!
Nella barchetta v’è un letto di fior...
La bianca prora somiglia un altare,
L’onde e le stelle sfavillan d’amor.
E quando tu vorrai,
La vela io scioglierò...
Lontan... lontano assai
Pel mar ti porterò.
Salvatore - Ma bravo davvero!
Gennariello - Finito non ho...
V’è ancora una strofa...
Salvatore - Con gioia l’udrò.
Gennariello - (come sopra)
Mia pêccêrella, tu chiedi ove andiamo.
Ti affida al vento, ti affida all’amor!
Tutta la notte vuo’ dirti che t’amo,
Tutta la notte vuo’ stringerti al cor.
E a me radiante in viso
Diranno i tuoi sospir:
Sul mare è il paradiso,
Sul mare io vuo’ morir!
Masaniello e detti.
25
Sir!... I am
over fifteen... you know?
Salvatore - I wasn’t aware of it.
Forgive me!...
Gennariello - Would you like to hear
the song I have composed for her?
Salvatore - For whom?
Gennariello - For her - isn’t that enough?
Salvatore - (sitting down again in front of the painting)
Good lad! Let’s hear it! And in the meantime
I’ll touch up my painting.
Gennariello - My singing will inspire you:
(he picks up a mandolin from the table and sings
accompanying himself)
3 My little one, ah! come to the sea!
In my little boat is a bed of flowers...
Its white prow looks like an altar,
Waves and stars glitter with love.
And when you want
I’ll unfurl the sail...
Far.. over the sea
we’ll float away.
Salvatore - Very nice indeed!
Gennariello - It’s not finished...
There is another verse.
Salvatore - I’ll gladly hear it.
Gennariello - (as above)
My little one, you ask me where we are going.
Trust in the wind, trust in love!
I wish to spend the night saying that I love you,
I wish to spend the night clasping you to my heart.
And your whispers
will tell me:
over the sea is paradise,
over the sea I wish to languish!
Masaniello and the above.
