Popolo - Evviva Masaniel!...
Ti benedica il ciel.
(Entusiasmo generale - tutti si affollano intorno a
Masaniello per abbracciarlo. Cala il sipario)
ATTO SECONDO
Scena Prima
Una stanza al Castelnuovo presso Napoli.
Andito a sinistra, porta a destra nello sfondo, altra
A sinistra
E’ desso!... E’ proprio desso!... Salvatore!...
Noi torneremo...
Isabella - (colpita) Padre...
Duca - Mi udisti!... Va’!... Qui il messo attendo.
(Isabella esce dalla piccola porta a destra)
36
People - Long live Masaniello!...
May heaven bless you.
(General enthusiasm - all gather around Masaniello to
congratulate him. Curtain)
SECOND ACT
First Scene
A room in Castelnuovo near Naples.
A passage on the left, a door in the back on the right,
another small door in the front on the right, a window,
unadorned walls, here and there a few suits of armour,
swords and muskets hanging on some walls. On the
left, a small table with a black covering, the necessary
writing materials and a small, black crucifix.
The Duke of Arcos, sitting at the table, reading a
paper. Isabella, standing near the window.
15 Isabella - (gazing out of the windiw)
It is he!... It is really he!... Salvatore!...
Even before I saw him, my heart knew...
Duke - (to Isabella, sternly)
Return to your rooms, daughter, and don
a more sumptuous dress - in one hour
we shall go back to Naples...
Isabella - (with joy) Can it be true... oh father!
You are going to accept Masaniello’s requests!
How happy that makes me!
Duke - (rising) Leave the grave
affairs of state to me... think of making yourself
beautiful, Isabella; so that your future husband
may be proud to offer you his arm.
Isabella - (troubled) Father...
Duke - You heard me!... Go! I’m waiting for an envoy .
(Isabella leaves by the small door on the right)
