Il popolo...
Masaniello - E tal pure è il voto mio...
2 Popolo - L’arbitro nostro... il nostro Re tu sei!
Masaniello - (scendendo dalla tribuna)
No! No! Che dite?... Oh!
Giorni ignorati vivere
Desìo fra l’onde e il cielo...
Libero al par di un’aquila,
Altero al par di un re.
Ma se tradito il popolo
A me levasse un grido,
Come un celeste vindice
Io scenderei sul lido...
E guai tre volte ai reprobi
Per la mancata fe’!
Coro - Nel dì tremendo, il popolo
Ancor sarà con te!
(Squilli di tromba nell’interno)
4 Gennariello - (che sarà salito sulla tribuna)
Viva! Viva!... Su! Accorriamo!...
Salvatore!
Tutti - (guardando verso il fondo della scena)
Gli Spagnuoli...
Briganti - Che si fa?...
Corcelli - Zitti!... Attendiamo!
Masaniello - (collocandosi ai piedi della tribuna)
Qui, o fratelli, intorno a me...
(Il popolo si schiera ai lati di Masaniello. Corcelli, i
briganti e alcuni Lazzeri dal lato opposto. Comincia la
marcia. I Soldati spagnuoli con Fernandez alla testa
the people are asking...
Masaniello - And that is what I also want...
2 People - You are our arbiter... our king!
Masaniello - (getting off the platform)
No! No! What are you saying?... let Duke come!
Let him keep the vain pomp of power - You
will have freedom... peace - I, the blessed
happiness of my sweet home...
my little boat... the bue skies... and the sea!...
(All gather around Masaniello and listen reverently)
3 I was born a poor man, and
do not yearn for tainted splendour ...
I wish to live an undistinguished life
over the waves and under the sky...
As free as a bird,
as proud as a king.
But if the people was ever betrayed
and cried out to me,
like a heavenly avenger
I would come to the shore...
And woe to the rogues
who did not keep their promises!
Chorus - On that grim day, the people
would be ready to follow you once again!
(Sounds of trumpets offstage)
4 Gennariello - (who has climbed on the platform)
Hurrah! Hurrah!... Come on! Let’s go meet them!...
Salvatore!
All - (looking towards the back of the stage)
The Spaniards...
Brigands - What shall we do?...
Corcelli - Quiet!... Let’s wait and see!
Masaniello - (at the foot of the platform)
Here, brothers, gather around me...
(The people line up on each side of Masaniello.
Corcelli, his brigands and some young men stand
opposite to them. March. Spanish soldiers, with
