Coro/ Fernandez - Duca... l’insano eccesso
Ti affretta a vendicar.
Duca - (con mistero) In mio poter è desso...
Cauti convien oprar!...
(Tutti escono)
Scena II
Monastero.
Portico che conduce all’oratorio - Sedili di pietra -
Qualche albero - Fiori al di là delle vetrate.
Suora Ines, Isabella.
13 Isabella - (entrando affannata)
D’aura... di luce ho d’uopo...
Ines - Presso il letto
D’una suora morente
Mi richiama il dover - Sulla sua bara
Tutte nel tempio pregherem fra poco...
Isabella - Giovane... forse...
Ines - (con intenzione)
E da profano amore
Tradita, indarno qui cercò l’oblio -
Il dolor la consunse...
(Si inchina ed esce)
Isabella - Ah! Tale, o padre,
- Vedete... è là...
Sul pallido viso
with the Count of Badajoz )
Chorus/ Fernandez - Duke... you must immediately
punish such wild intemperance.
Duke - (mysteriously) He is in my power...
We had better be cautious!...
(All leave)
Scene II
A monastery.
A porch, leading to the oratory - Stone benches -
Trees - Flowers behind the window panes.
Sister Ines, Isabella.
13 Isabella - (entering in a state of agitation)
I feel the need for air... sunlight...
Ines - Duty calls me
to the bedside
of a dying nun - shortly
we shall pray over her coffin...
Isabella - Young... perhaps...
Ines - (meaningfully)
And betrayed by her earthly love,
in vain did she come here to forget -
sorrow has consumed her...
(She bows and leaves)
Isabella - Ah! That is the fate, father,
to which you have condemned me on this earth!...
(Death knell. Isabella kneels down and weeps)
Nuns - (crossing the porch on their way to the oratory)
Let’s go to church - let’s invoke peace
on our sister whom the Lord has taken back...
May God put her to rest where she can feel no pain...
where all earthly yearnings are appeased.
(Stopping in groups and showing curiosity at the sight
of Isabella)
- See... there she is...
On her pale face
