Soviet programs for industrial construction of apartment houses were aimed at providingeach family with a flat, rather than development of flexible market of apartmentbuildings, where families could make their choices. Thus up to the present day,housing still is a purchase of entire life. During Soviet times, in housing design moreattention was drawn to political economical goals rather than social and cultural. Thisaffected residents’ emotional condition and even now people do not identify themselveswith their place of living.6. Apartment buildings are elements shaping the architectural tissue in a city. Mixedco-existence of different functions, including residential, public and commercial one,makes a crucial impact on integration of an apartment building into the existing townstructure.7. After 1990 a tendency starts to develop that at all house designing levels, horizontalprojections and vertical cross-sections included, poor diversity of functional layoutstructure types is applied. Functional schemes of apartments often resemble thosecreated in the Soviet period. Sectional type layout structure is dominating.8. After an analysis of functional schemes of contemporary apartment buildings in Lithuaniaafter 1990, it is obvious that so far too little attention is paid to public spaces insuch house, where the house community could meet. Lack of such spaces is a seriousobstacle to creation of a resident-friendly atmosphere, residents are deprived of possibilitiesto communicate and this in turn drives to alienation. Certain improvement offunctional structure of apartment buildings is more noticeable in Lithuania; more featuresappear in proof of our architects’ increasing professional level and certain changesripen in architecture of apartment buildings promising for excellent results and appropriaterepresentation of contemporary Lithuanian architecture in Western Europe.158
