Government his share of the Districts of Cadoe and Pagitan,<br />

together with the Districts of Djapan, Djipan and Grobogan,<br />

with its dependenoies.<br />

Art. 4. His Highness, impressed with the advantages which<br />

must result from an improved and judicious administration of<br />

his commercial imposts, agrees to place in the hands of the<br />

British Government the sole management of the Bandhars and<br />

Passars in his dominions, and that His Highness may not incur<br />

any loss on this account, the British Government, on their part,<br />

agree to pay to H.H. an annual Gratoity of one hundred thousand<br />

dollars.<br />

Art. 5. H.H. confirms to the British Government the exclusive<br />

mon<strong>op</strong>oly of the Soosoo or edible birds-nests, and of the sale<br />

of <strong>op</strong>ium, throughout his territories, and under such regulations<br />

as they may please to direct.<br />

Art. 6. H.H. secures to the British Government the sole right<br />

and pr<strong>op</strong>erty of the teak tim<strong>be</strong>r, within the whole of the country<br />

subject to his administration.<br />

Art. 7. For the maintenance of tranquillity and good order<br />

within the country, H.H. the Sultan shall establish a regular<br />

and permanent system of police, and he shall <strong>be</strong> guided, in carrying<br />

this measure into execution, by the suggestions of the<br />

British Government.<br />

Art. 8. Except the Javanese born within the Territories of<br />

Mataram, every person of any other description whatever, üving<br />

under His Highness's administration, shall <strong>be</strong> considered under the<br />

immediate jurisdiction of the British Government, and whenever<br />

the subjects of H.H. are concerned in an offence against persons<br />

thus placed under the British protection, H.H. engages to direct<br />

immediate and impartial justice to <strong>be</strong> administered, to the satisfaction<br />

of the British Government, and it shall <strong>be</strong> the duty of<br />

the British Eesident to interfere therein, as far as may <strong>be</strong> necessary<br />

to this end.<br />

Art. 9. In the administration of justice within His Highness's<br />

Territories, it is stipulated, that every kind of torture and muti-
