connected with the advancement of His Highness's interests or the<br />

•welfare of his pe<strong>op</strong>le.<br />

Art. 18. The Depatti or first Minister of H.H.'s Government<br />

shall in future <strong>be</strong> approved and subject to removal at the will<br />

of the British Government; and in the exercise of his office, it<br />

shall <strong>be</strong> his duty to consult and communicate with the British<br />

Resident on all subjects whatever.<br />

Art. 19. H.H. the Sultan shall hold no intercourse, either with<br />

foreign powers of any description or with the native powers or<br />

subordinate chiefs of Java, without the previous permission of<br />

the British Government.<br />

Art. 20. H.H. engages that he will offer no molestation to the<br />

friends or adherents of the lale Sultan, and that he will make a<br />

li<strong>be</strong>ral provision for such of his children and family as are now<br />

at Djocjokarta.<br />

Art. "21. The Pangerang ïfotto Cosoemo, Pakoe Alam, intending<br />

to enter into the service of the British Government, H.H. the<br />

Sultan engages not to offer any hindrance thereto, and promises<br />

not to molest his family or dependents on that account.<br />

Art. 22. As the present distribution of the Highlands of Java<br />

<strong>be</strong>tween the Honorable the English East India Company, the<br />

Soosoohonan and the Sultan of Mataram, is productive of mutual<br />

inconvenience and is disadvantageous to the interests of all parties,<br />

in consequence of their respective lands <strong>be</strong>ing intersected<br />

and in small detached portions, H.H. the Sultan consents to an<br />

exchange of the same with a view to render the several frontiers<br />

connected and regular, and H.H. also promises to sanction, on<br />

his part, such arrangement as may hereafter <strong>be</strong> made with the<br />

Soosoohonan by the British Government, for the eventual exchange<br />

of such lands accordingly.<br />

Art. 23. All stipulations, in former treaties, which are not annulled<br />

in the foregoing articles, are to remain in full force.<br />

This treaty to have immediate effect, but to <strong>be</strong> subject to the<br />

confirmation of the Right Honorable the Governor-General in<br />

Council.<br />
