SYNTHESI AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NANOCOMPOSITES PET WITH LAMELLAR ZIRCONIUM PHOSPHATE Lílian dos Santos Brandão Advisor: Luís Cláudio Mendes/ Marcos Lopes Dias Preparation of nanocomposites of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and lamellar zirconium phosphorous compounds by using melt extrusion were investigated. Two types of zirconium phosphorous compounds were synthesized by direct precipitation reaction method: α-zirconium bis(monohydrogen orthophosphate) monohydrate (α-Zr(HPO4)2.H2O ou ZrP.H2O) and the organic-inorganic hybrid layered zirconium phenylphosphonate (Zr(C6H5PO3)2 ou ZrPP). Two other compounds were prepared from ZrP.H2O. Part of the material was dried for 250°C/1h (ZrPseco) and another part was intercalated with butylamine (ZrP.but). Composites containing 0.5, 1, 2 and 5% of ZrP.H2O, ZrPseco, ZrP.but and ZrPP were prepared in a twin screw extruder and specimens obtained by injection molding. The structural modification of the layered filler in the composite matrix was investigated by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Crystallization and thermal properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, and mechanical properties evaluated by tensile test. While ZrPcontaining composites showed the characteristic diffraction peaks at 2θ =11.7º (d= 7.54Ǻ) indicative of no delamilation, ZrPP showed practically no low angle diffraction peak at 2θ = 5.5º (d= 15.24 Ǻ), indicating loss of the layered order. In both types of composites, the filler particles are well dispersed and have submicron dimensions, ranging from 50-500 nm in size. TEM images of ZrPP viii
particles indicated the formation of an intercalated/partially delaminated nanocomposite. The behavior was attributed to the higher affinity of the polyester with phenyl groups on platelet surface of ZrPP.
