Winter Building Season
Poland has a long winter season, making the available time for
construction works comparatively short. Builders have to face
unfavourable and often highly unpredictable weather conditions,
which can last until April, thus making it very hard to get the work
done on schedule and within the budget.
Zima jest trudnym czasem dla prowadzenia robót budowlanych,
zwłaszcza w Polsce, gdzie niezwykle trudno określić jest długość
jej trwania. Niektóre roboty muszą więc zostać przerwane, inne
ograniczone, a jeszcze inne można przeprowadzić tylko
w określonych warunkach.
Przeczytaj tekst zawierający odpowiedzi na podstawowe
pytania dotyczące prac budowlanych
zimą. Dopasuj do nich poniższe pytania. Jedno pytanie
nie pasuje do żadnej odpowiedzi.
Although it is possible to perform some works inside
a building, it hardly seems feasible to build roads and
bridges in winter temperatures, does it?
Doesn’t the newest technology allow the development
of building materials that can be used in low
temperatures?
What regulations govern the performing of works in
low temperatures?
Who covers the fi nancial losses in the case of
a prolonged suspension of work?
With the building site covered with snow, the earth frozen
or unstable, is it possible to perform any work at all?
Work is very much limited in bad weather. How do
you handle the problem of employment, working
hours and pay?
A. ______________________________________________
In such severe weather conditions, work will almost
certainly have to be interrupted as major construction
works, such as formwork, steel work, concreting, etc.
will be impossible to undertake. Th erefore, if you are
faced with the arrival of bad weather, you’d better get the
building enclosed and under roof before the winter sets in.
As long as heating is installed in an unfi nished building
then it is possible to perform interior fi nishing work, like
plastering, stuccoing, gypsum fi nishing, tiling fl oors and
walls, as well as completing some electromechanical
installations.
B. ______________________________________________
Truly, today’s technological advancements make it possible
to create conditions that allow certain construction work
to go ahead in low temperatures, for instance by using
winter concrete, lime, weathering steel, pre-cast concrete.
However, such solutions are usually rather expensive.
C. ______________________________________________
Despite the fact that no earthwork or surface and concrete
works are conducted, minor works can last the whole
winter, providing that the temperature is above zero. In
fact, no matter how severe the winter, the suspension of
work doesn’t usually last longer than 60 days.
D. ______________________________________________
Obviously, conditions which allow building to continue in
winter are stated in the Polish Building Regulations and
in detailed technological specifi cations based on these
regulations. Th ey indicate for instance how and where to
calculate the surface temperature, its scope and duration
before the suspension of work. All construction works
must comply with these regulations.
E. ______________________________________________
Well, it largely depends on the particular employer. For
instance, people may work in three shifts, 24 hours a day,
six days a week during the building season, then either
the days off work or additional payments are considered
a holiday equivalent. Th e engineers work all year round,
revising documentation, preparing quotations, calculating
costs of materials and deliveries.
