Based on background data, a Case 2012 biogas plant has been established. The centralised biogasplant receives 700 tonnes of biomass per day. The input is 78% slurry (pigs and dairy cows), 12%is the solid fraction from separation and 10 % is maize silage. The dry matter content is 11.5% andthe production gives 29 m 3 methane per tonne of input. The total investment is 98 million DKK,which is equivalent to 384 DKK per tonne of input of biomass. The sold energy, after deduction forenergy used in the processing, is 6.1 million m 3 methane or 220,000 GJ (engine is around 3.4MW el ).The total investment is 98 million DKK and the interest is set at 7.5%. The interest is high becausethe owners of the biogas plants find it very difficult to attract capital. The farmers own capital andthe low risk capital require 4%, but the high risk capital demands an interest of 15%. The interestreflects, therefore, the difficulties which many farmers find when trying to find capital for biogasplants in Denmark. The municipalities’ credit company (kommunekredit) does, however, try toprovide loans with low interest, but this option is not always seen by investors as commerciallyviable as the legislation restricts the allowed profits. It is assumed that the biogas replaces natural gas. The sales price is 168 DKK per GJ in 2013, but itis falling to 138 DKK per GJ in 2031 (fixed prices). The sales price in 2013 is based on a price fornatural gas of 64,4 DKK per GJ at the Central Heat and Power Unit (CHP) as the pipes are includedin the biogas plant investment. If biogas substitutes other types of energy, this would often affectthe selling price downwards. The total income minus the purchase of input like solid fractions and maize is 27 million DKK or105 DKK per tonne input or 3.6 DKK per m 3 methane. The total costs for the investment and transportation is 24 million DKK per year or 93 DKK pertonne of input or 3.2 DKK per m 3 methane produced. The yearly surplus is 3.0 million DKK or 12DKK per tonne of input or 0.4 DKK per m 3 methane produced. The production price, including thetotal production costs as well as the purchase of solid fractions and maize, comes to 4.7 DKK perm 3 methane.134
