Thomas Meyer-Hermann, Andreas Hykade, Thomas Stellmach und
die Zwillingsbrüder Christoph und Wolfgang Lauenstein. Gerade
mit dem Gewinn des Oscars für den besten kurzen Trickfilm für
BALANCE (1990) von den Lauensteins erhielt der künstlerische animierte
Kurzfilm in Deutschland große Aufmerksamkeit, wenngleich
die Aufführungsmöglichkeiten für Kurzfilme im Kino und Fernsehen
zunehmend geringer wurden.
Die düstere Puppentrickparabel BALANCE ist eine präzise Reflexion
über die Conditio Humana und ein Meilenstein der Trickfilmgeschichte.
Auch aus Kassel kommt der ebenfalls mit dem Oscar
ausgezeichnete Kurzfilm qUEST (1996) von Tyron Montgomery
und Thomas Stellmach, der, obwohl er in der Machart ein konven-

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, on the one hand major uncertainties
arose in the animated film area, but on the other hand interesting
new developments occurred. Already in the early 1980s a
new colourful animation scene had developed through the establishment
of animation study courses at the art schools in Kassel
and Stuttgart. The driving forces behind this were the Dutchman
paul Driessen in Kassel and Albrecht Ade in Stuttgart, with
the latter also establishing the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film
in 1982. These study courses produced such renowned animation
filmmakers of today as Gil Alkabetz, Thomas Meyer-Hermann,
Andreas Hykade, Thomas Stellmach and the twins christoph and
Wolfgang Lauenstein. On winning the Oscar for the Best Animated
Short Film with BALAnce (1990) from the Lauensteins, artistic
animated short film in Germany was accorded great regard, even
as the screening opportunities for short film in the cinemas and
on television were being increasingly reduced.
The gloomy puppet animation parable BALAnce is a precise reflection
on the conditio Humana and a milestone in animated
film history. Kassel was also the source of the Oscar-winning short
film QUeST (1996) by Tyron Montgomery and Thomas Stellmach
which, although a conventional puppet animation film in terms
of how it is made, is more consistent with the logic of a computer
game with its various different levels.
In addition to the already mentioned animation artists such as
Kirsten Winter, Bärbel neubauer or Robert Seidel, who definitely
do see themselves in the abstract animated film tradition, a short
film filmmaker scene has established itself that manages, with
the means of animated film, to create narrative worlds in a pragmatic
manner – regardless of whether they are humorous and
minimalist like those from Gil Alkabetz or reflective and pictorial
