In addition to the official calendar of events,
Porto Bay also created other events under its
own initiative. The selection allows the hotel
group to join in with some of the most significant
cultural events of each destination,
showing that these moments can also be experienced
at a Porto Bay hotel. Most events
are publicised at least 6 months in advance.
The list of events includes New year celebrations
in Madeira or in Rio de Janeiro;
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Madeira and in
the Algarve; for golf, the Madeira Islands
Open or the Portugal Masters, golf events in
the Algarve, Fashion Week in São Paulo and
many others.
In Madeira, Porto Bay Events calendar covers
most events in the official events calendar
for this destination. In addition to these there
are exclusive events such as the Chocolate
and Madeira Wine week, in January, Classic
Cars in June, Wine Week in early September,
food festivals and other events.
It is the same criteria in the Algarve. The calendar
includes medieval festivals, others have
traditional themes (such as the Fisherman’s
Festival, in Albufeira or the Popular Saints tradition)
there is also music, such as the Jazz
Festival in Loulé, or the world music festival
Festival Med. There is also room for the Chocolate,
Regional Desserts and Liquor Wines in
Spring and the Wine Week in October.
The choice of events is based on how important
they are to the destination and how
close they are to the hotels. The “réveillon”
New year’s Eve celebrations in Rio are
unique, watched from the rooftop of Porto
Bay Rio Internacional, in Copacabana; another
event in the “cidade maravilhosa” with no
comparison elsewhere in the world is Carnival,
which Porto Bay compliments with a
truly traditional “feijoada carioca”.
Each time these exclusive events take place
they aim to embody the characteristics of
each destination. One good example is the
Madeira Carnival. As founders of the initiative,
Porto Bay hotels take their guests to
parade in a troupe in full traditional costume.
“A unique experience” claims Ann Davidson,
guest at the Porto Santa Maria hotel, with a
big smile from between the feathers on her
costume, confirming that she will be back to
repeat the experience.
