Aim of the project
Kapuvár is a small town at the meeting point of three areas, where the configuration of the terrain are favourable for biking.
The project wishes to combine the biking-, cultural-, gastronomic and hiker tourism through the establishment of a service
centre. It is aimed at developing the bicycle tourism and eco-tourism around Kapuvár and to ensure the practice of a healthy
lifestyle. Creating an exhibition hall, tourist information bureau and bicycle centre, introducing the rent-a-bike service
the settlement wishes to ensure cheap lodging for the bikers and other tourists.
Content of the project
As a result of the project a service facility was established
with 21 beds on 889 square metres in total, which serves
the needs of the biking, hiking tourists and the ones
interested in the local cultural treasures. The multifunctional
unit – reflecting the relevant signs of the three aims - houses
7 pension rooms, a dining room, a conference room,
reception, a standing exhibition with the works of Pátzay
Pál sculptor, a corner arranged on Hany Istók’s legend,
a rent-a-bike and repair shop, bike storage, small regional
and turinform bureau, exhibition hall and heating cabinet.
The facility offers 40 bikes for rental, to which the repair
equipment is also available. In the coffee shop 6 computers
offer internet access for the guests. The information bureau
serves as information centre and reception. In addition
to the touring guide leaflets, multimedia DVD publication,
radio spots and advertising report has also been produced.
8 biking routes have been identified, which are shown on
the bicycle road maps, marketing publications. On 13 August
2006 the biking day was organised in cooperation with
the Austrian town Andau, whereby cross-border biking
and relation building were achieved in mutual organisation.
For this occasion the temporary border crossing station
was opened at Andau Bridge, thus the Austrian tourists
could easily reach Kapuvár, while the local people could
bike to Andau. The participants had free entry to the spa
in Andau and Kapuvár. A touring offer guide in Hungarian
and German was made in 700 copies under the title
‘One (+1) tour per day’. The routes were determined in
consultation with the experts of Fertô-Hanság National
Park. Each tour contained one four-day offer, the
adventurous hikers could freely select from them.
Results of the project
In recent years the improvement of bicycle and ecotourism
in this region can be clearly identified. Thanks to
the infrastructure being created the opportunity is ensured
that the biking tourists arriving from the border of 15 km
will find resting places through connecting the biking
routes along Fertô Lake and Szigetköz, and on the other
side of the border, where not only resting, but the tourist
attraction are also tempting. As a result of the construction
of the bicycle centre new jobs for 13 persons were created
in relation to catering, operation of the lodging and
programme organisation.
