2. Abstract:
How dangerous ist the UV-radiation for the human eye?
It has been proved for a long time that UV-radiation th the earth and thus to us
steadily increases.
The consequence to the skin ist well known. Surveys document that 95 per cent of
the interviewed persons link UV-radiation with skin damage and 85 per cent are
informed about the risk of melanos.
Only 10 per cent of the interviewed persons link UV-radiation with eye damage!
It´s accredited, that the eye is next to the skin the 2nd delicate organ of the human
body what concerns the effect oft he sunlight.
The challenge of an optician or an optometrist is to inform his customers about the
risk of UV-radiation to the human eye.
These problems inspired us to analyse and investigate this problem.
Our work is structured into a general part, in which we give information about UV-
radiation. Followed by an part where the anatomy of the human eye is explaned as
well as the sections of the human eye, where UV-radiation is effective. This is
followed by the main part of our work: The description of the consequence of UV-
radiation to the human eye. At last we describe medically approved UV-radiation as
well as artificial UV-radiation like the solarium.
In our thesis we wanted to create a reference book for students who follow us at the
PHTL of optometry.
