industry-centric approach. This fueled my decision to donate my “Man at Work“ collection, which
had meanwhile grown substantially, as well as a representative museum building, to MSOE.
The artistic design of the new museum offered H.D. Tylle a unique opportunity to demonstrate his
multifacetedness and to venture something new. While planning the dome, he developed a compositional
grid of the seven large stained glass windows (88 x 64 inches) and closely collaborated
on their realization with the “Mayerischen Hofkunstanstalt,” the renowned stained glass architectural
firm of Munich. The drafts of a floor mosaic (375 square feet) for the entrance hall and a gigantic ceiling
mural (700 square feet) above it, were likewise new territory for the artist. He completed the latter
work in his studio in Kassel, from where the massive individual pieces were shipped to Milwaukee. In
addition to this, two large murals were created for MSOE: “The Spirit of Athletics,” 2005 (18 x14 ft)
in the new Kern Center, as well as a huge outdoor mural, “Allegory of Industry and Agriculture” (430
square feet), which features a trompe-l’œil foreground and adorns the sculpture garden on the roof
of the Grohmann Museum.
I would like to express my best personal thanks to H.D. Tylle for his dedication and the artistically superb
results. It is a pleasure for me to congratulate him on the success of his latest project: “Touring
Germany“. I wish him every success with the presentation of the resulting artworks, which are under
the honorary patronage of the Federal State of Hessen and have been so generously supported by
Merck in Darmstadt and BASF Schwarzheide GmbH.
