man 1802, Bonhomme 1855 and Meunier 1889). In his project “Journey through Germany”, Tylle
picks up this thematic area under the aspect of industry and landscape, as he expressly combines
his two major themes, “industry” and “landscape”. Again, the paintings in this cycle present a focus
on the massive transformation of nature through human intervention into the environment.
To add social critique to his realism, Tylle has no need to resort to the exaggerated tools of verism.
Rather, his choice of specific pictorial approaches, themes and perspectives and a low level of
abstraction are sufficient to show us not only the productivity that leads to prosperity but also the
problems which characterize the production methods of modern industry.
