and yet something quite extraordinary happens here. The opportunity for studies is always limited. It
is subject to the dictates of time, the changing light and the circumstances. Of itself, this ephemeral
painting process with its characteristic painting technique never takes longer than a day. Two to four
hours are usually spent on it.
The special feature of a study is the short-lived burst of incredible energy. No less characteristic is
the uninterrupted process, the holistic nature of the painting process in which there is no time for
speculation or brooding. The study demands timing. You have to be able to gage how much attention
has to be given to the details, how swiftly backgrounds have to be painted in, and what degree
of color differentiation needs to be aimed for. If the timing’s wrong, the balance is lost.
Within a study, the realistic painter is entirely the medium. This means that he adopts a totally receptive
attitude so that the visual sense data can sink in and take their effect. In such working phases,
you know nothing, you become one with the action, you are what you can do at precisely that moment.
Within this state of tension, a process takes place that generates experience and results that
yield more that you knew beforehand. Every study is an experience via the instrument embodied by
the artist. You can term study-painting the art of self-instrumentalization.
It is the central school of the realists.
You really have to get to know Tylle during his study work. I had the opportunity several times to paint
landscapes with him. Until that time, I had been something of a leisurely painter. When working with
Tylle, I soon gave that up. I realized that you either see things straight off or not at all.
