A new directory for the community:
QUEERMED DEUTSCHLAND

Prejudice and resentment towards the community
are still an issue when it comes to health care. Sara
Grzybek has therefore launched a new Germany-wide
online directory for queer and trans* friendly doctors
and therapists this summer, helping patients find nondiscriminatory
medical support in their area.
Hi, Sara, please tell us briefly how you came
up with the idea to set up queermed.de.
Queermed Germany was created through
the accidental discovery of queermed.at, a
directory for queer and trans* friendly doctors
in Austria on Instagram. I was surprised
that there is not already such a directory in
Germany, because the difficulty of finding
a doctor is a general problem. It was only
through contacting queermed.at that I found
out about gynformation.de, a directory for gynecologists,
midwives, endocrinologists and
general practitioners working in gynecology.
I am incredibly grateful to the people who
stand behind these websites for their time
and advice, of which they have given me
plenty.

How does it all work?
With the help of an anonymous questionnaire,
recommendations are made so that other
people can find specialists and seek them
out. Questions about the range of treatments
and the interaction with the doctor and the
person being treated are asked in order to
ensure that the person to be treated or practice
can be recommended to others.
Other groups can also be named here, such
as Jewish and Muslim persons, people with
disabilities and people who are overweight
or slightly overweight. But also people with
a positive HIV status or sex workers. Great
importance is attached to the fact that, in addition
to people from the LGBTQIA * community,
other groups who regularly struggle with
discrimination can find safe spaces.
This project is completely voluntary and no
income is generated.
What has happened since the launch?
To make the project better known, I posted a
lot on my private Instagram account. I also
asked people to share the posts, which caused
my account to explode a bit. Then I created my
own profile for the website.
It’s still in its infancy, but it’s getting more and
more reviews and of course I hope the platform
will evolve and really help people. (ts,mb)
