The “Elektronische Patientenakte“ is available
in Germany since the beginning of the year, and
the health system is currently being completely
digitized. What are the advantages?
I am a big fan of digitization. Practices and
pharmacies will be able to manage data more
efficiently and easily, be it medication, billing
and many other administrative matters. The
advantage for the patient is that all personal
health data can be found instantly. You have
all diagnoses, x-rays and lab results ready at
the touch of a button. Digitalization is a great
opportunity to optimize processes and results.
However, it must be emphasized that sensitive
data is sent via public systems. Here you have
to ensure a very high level of security. This
includes employee data, practice data, patient
data, customer data as well as the exchange of
laboratory data.
How do you proceed as a doctor or pharmacist
if you want more security?
First and foremost, every doctor or pharmacist
must address the issue of data protection and
make it a chief matter. Because it‘s about the
very existence of the practice or pharmacy.
If digitization is the future and everything
is processed digitally, then it is essential to
professionally map data protection in every
doctor‘s practice and pharmacy. For example,
the appointment of a data protection officer by
an untrained doctor or employee is only a sham
solution, as a data protection officer without
knowledge is still liable to fines. In the event of
damage in particular, this may lead to possible
existence-threatening consequences. Immediate
help is required in the event of a claim. The
question of whether claims assistance services
should be available 24/7 must be answered
with „Yes“. Procrastination does not work. Every
responsible doctor or pharmacist should be
aware of this. The appropriate measures must
now be taken.
A decision about the implementation leads
to whether the doctor or pharmacist regulates
the data protection measures internally
through their own employees or entrusts
themselves to external specialists. The important
thing is: you have to be active!
But as with all larger projects, it is advisable
to use a professional. Later you may be able to
arrange the necessary activities yourself if you
know what it is about. For example, we offer
