UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Martin, a 19-year-old college student, recently returned

from a mission trip to Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa. He

presented in the emergency room with severe myalgia,

abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills,

sweats, enlarged cervical lymph nodes, and diminished

reactions to pain. A tender erythematous lesion was found

on the calf of his right leg.
