accidental or incidental host (pl., hosts) Host
other than the normal host that is harboring a
parasite.
accolé Refers to the location of parasites, specifically
select species of Plasmodium, that assume
a crescent-shaped mass at the outer edge of a red
blood cell; also known as appliqué.
aestivoautumnal malaria Infections with P. falciparum
that occur in the warmer months of late
summer and early autumn.
amastigote (pl., amastigotes) Oval, nonflagellated
morphologic form found in some of the
hemoflagellate life cycles; also known as an L.D.
(Leishman-Donovan) body and leishmanial
form.
ameba (pl., amebas) Common name for a motile
class of Protozoa (scientific name, Sarcodina)
equipped with pseudopods for the purpose of
locomotion; some use a different spelling
(amoeba, amoebae).
amebiasis Infection with amebas.
amebic Pertaining to the amebas.
amebic colitis Any intestinal amebic infection
exhibiting symptoms.
amebic dysentery Any intestinal amebic infection
characterized by blood and mucus in the stool.
amebic infection Invasion of amebic parasites
into the body.
anaphylactic shock Allergic response producing
large amounts of histamine and other chemical
mediators caused by exposure to a foreign substance;
may produce fatal results; also known as
anaphylaxis.
anergic Describes a patient who is unable to
mount an adequate immune response.
Animalia Kingdom of animals that includes the
arthropods.
appliqué Refers to the location of parasites, specifically
select species of Plasmodium, that
assume a crescent-shaped mass at the outer edge

arthropod (pl., arthropods) Organism that has a
hard exoskeleton and paired jointed legs, such
as an insect.
artifact (pl., artifacts) A microscopic structure or
form that resembles a parasite; may also be
referred to as a confuser or pseudoparasite.
arthralgia (pl., arthralgias) Joint pain.
autoreinfection Reinfecting oneself. For example,
this process may occur in the pinworm life cycle
in which the deposited eggs in the perianal region
are ingested via hand-to-mouth contamination.
axoneme (pl., axonemes) Intracellular portion of
flagellum; the internal cytoskeletal structure that
supports flagella.
axostyle Rodlike support structure found in some
flagellates.
Baghdad boil (pl., Baghdad boils) A common
name for an infection with Leishmania tropica;
it is a cutaneous form of leishmaniasis presenting
with pus-containing ulcers.
bay sore A common name for a cutaneous form
of infection caused by Leishmania Mexicana.
benign tertian malaria The disease caused by
infection with Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium
ovale; characterized by a 10- to 17-day
incubation period postexposure. The vague
symptoms present mimic those generally seen in
cases of the flu, including nausea, vomiting,
headache, muscle pains, and photophobia.
Infected patients usually experience bouts of
fever and chills (known as paroxysms) every 48
hours.
black water fever A name for the disease caused
by Plasmodium falciparum that develops following
a relatively short incubation period of 7
to 10 days. Daily episodes of chills and fever, as
well as severe diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting,
rapidly develop, followed by cyclic paroxysms,
which occur every 36 to 48 hours. A
