is not readily available and treatment primarily

consists of palliative care, pain management, and

general wound care until the site heals. Occasionally,

surgical intervention may be needed for

débridement of necrotic tissue. Bites by the hobo

spider usually only require simple wound care to

prevent secondary bacterial infections.

Prevention and Control

Prevention of venomous spider bites is a matter

of minimizing places where they can hide and

breed, as well as exercising caution when dealing

with potential exposure locations (e.g., wood

piles). Pesticides can be used around dwellings

but are not always effective. Sealing holes in

exterior walls where plumbing pipes and electrical

wires enter a home is essential for preventing

their access to inside living spaces. Minimizing

clutter outside but adjacent to the home will

minimize their tendency to build webs close by.

Morphology

Scorpions have a distinctive body shape, with a

combined cephalothorax and an elongated abdominal

section that ends in an up-curved tail (Fig.

13-7; Table 13-4). Adults may reach 4 inches in

length. The final segment in the tail contains a

stinger and venom sac. Like all arachnids, scorpions

have four pairs of legs, but their first set is

enlarged, with clawlike pincers to hold prey.

Like spiders, young scorpions are simply smaller

versions of the adult. Young develop in the

female’s ovariuterus. After birth, the brood rides

on the mother’s back until the first molting, at

approximately 2 weeks of age. They do not

change morphology but undergo six moltings,

increasing in size with each molt. The life span

varies by species from 4 to 25 years.
