CHAPTER 8 The Nematodes

189

A. Identify and/or label the designated

characteristic structure(s).

B. State the purpose of designated

characteristic structure(s).

C. Identify the organism by scientific name,

common name, and morphologic form.

D. State the common name for associated

conditions or diseases, if applicable.

8-11. Analyze case studies that include pertinent

patient information and laboratory data

and do the following:

A. Identify each responsible nematode

organism by scientific name, common

name, and morphologic form.

B. Identify the associated diseases and

conditions associated with the

responsible parasite

C. Construct a life cycle associated with

each nematode parasite present that

includes corresponding epidemiology,

route of transmission, infective stage,

and diagnostic stage.

D. Propose each of the following related to

stopping and preventing nematode

infections:

1. Treatment options

2. Prevention and control plan

E. Recognize sources of error, including

but not limited to those involved in

specimen collection, processing, and

testing and propose solutions to remedy

them.

F. Interpret laboratory data, determine

specific follow-up tests to be done, and

predict the results of those identified

tests.

8-12. Identify, compare, and contrast the

similarities and differences among the

parasites discussed in this and other

chapters in this text.

8-13. Describe standard and alternative

laboratory diagnostic approaches as

appropriate for the recovery of nematodes

in clinical specimens.

8-14. Given prepared laboratory specimens

and with the assistance of this manual,

the learner will be able to do the

following:

A. Differentiate nematode organisms from

artifacts.

B. Differentiate the nematode

organisms from each other and from

the other appropriate categories of

parasites.

C. Correctly identify each nematode

parasite by scientific, common name,

and morphologic form based on its key

characteristic structure(s).

CASE STUDY 8-1

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Maria, a 5-year-old girl, presented to a local clinic complaining

of diarrhea and gastrointestinal pain and bleeding.

Patient history revealed that Maria recently emigrated to

the United States from Puerto Rico. The physician on duty

ordered a series of stool samples for O&P. Barrel-shaped

structures, as noted below, that appeared to have plugs at

each end were seen on the direct wet preps, concentrated

wet preps after performing a zinc sulfate flotation method,

and permanent stains.

Questions and Issues for Consideration

1. What is the scientific name and morphologic form of

the parasite present in Maria’s samples? (Objective

8-11A)

2. What is the common name for this parasite? (Objective

8-11 A)

3. How did Maria contract this parasite? (Objective 8-11C)

4. Which disease state is associated with this parasite?

(Objective 8-11B)

5. Which morphologic form of this parasite may be visible

on microscopic examination of the intestinal mucosa of

this patient? (Objective 8-11F)
