CHAPTER 13 The Arthropods

Quick Quiz! 13-30

How do cockroaches affect the health of humans?

(Objectives 13-6 and 13-8)

A. They transmit diseases during a blood meal on the

human host.

B. They are capable of vertical transmission of rickettsial

diseases.

C. They carry and transmit diseases by mechanical

transfer to uncovered food.

D. None of the above.

LOOKING BACK

Each of the arthropods discussed in this chapter

is responsible for transmitting one or more parasites,

as summarized in Table 13-13. In addition,

each arthropod may also be the source of human

infestation independent of its parasite-transmitting

capabilities. In addition, each arthropod

may also be the source of human infestation or

illness independent of its parasite-transmitting

capabilities. Thus, accurate identification of these

arthropods is crucial to treat, prevent, and

control infections.

Proper identification of the arthropods

described in this chapter requires careful inspection

of the head, thorax, and abdominal regions.

Although these organisms are visible to the naked

eye, microscopic examination may be helpful to

confirm the identification and for speciation.

Comparison drawings of the arthropods discussed

are shown at the end of this chapter. These

will serve as a visual summary of the arthropods’

key features.
