CHAPTER 13 The Arthropods
13-6. Define scutum and describe how it is
used in the identification of arthropods.
(Objective 13-1)
13-7. Define the following key terms: (Objective
13-1)
A. Hemocele
B. Vertical transmission
C. Capitulum
13-8. A physician’s office calls for instructions
on how to prepare a nonflying bug
for laboratory examination. Which of
the following is the proper method
for submission of this specimen? (Objective
13-4)
A. Ask them to place the specimen in a
dry, properly labeled container and
send within 2 days to the laboratory.
B. Ask them to place the specimen in
a properly labeled container with
enough 70% ethanol to immerse the
sample completely and send the
sample to the laboratory as soon as
possible.
C. Tell them to place the sample in a
small amount of gauze, place it in an
envelope, and mail to the laboratory.
D. Tell them to place the sample in a
properly labeled container with
enough 5% formalin to immerse the
sample completely and send the
sample to the laboratory as soon as
possible.
E. Two of the above are acceptable
methods of specimen handling and
submission for ectoparasite identification:
____________ (specify)
13-9. Dermonecrotic cellulitis resulting in the
progressive loss of surrounding tissue
is typically associated with bites from
which of the following arachnids? (Objective
13-9)
A. Brown recluse spider
B. Black widow spider
C. Desert hairy scorpion
D. Bark scorpion
13-10. An arthropod that was found on a patient
in a public health clinic was sent to
the laboratory for identification. The
characteristics included six legs, the front
pair with clawlike shapes, and a large,
oval-shaped abdomen. This arthropod
most likely belongs to which of the following
groups? (Objective 13-5 and
13-13)
A. Mites
B. Lice
C. Ticks
D. Fleas
CASE STUDY 13-2
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
Jared is a registered nurse at a long-term care facility.
Several new residents have been admitted in the past 2
weeks and he has been assigned to perform their initial
health screenings and interviews. Other than the need for
intermediate-level assistance care because of the infirmities
of age, most of the patients appeared relatively healthy.
One patient who is also at the beginning stages of
dementia has obviously not been properly cared for in the
recent past; his hygiene levels are poor. This may in part be
caused by the onset of dementia and the fact that he lived
alone for the past 2 years. However, Jared also notices that
the patient seems restless and has a hard time sitting still
or in one place for very long. A physical examination
reveals appropriate indices for a person of this age but
there seem to be a number of red papules on the abdomen,
around the waistline. There is no fever; the heart rate, blood
pressure, and respirations are normal. Further questioning
reveals that the patient has been scratching this area
intensely.
Questions and Issues for Consideration
1. Which ectoparasite might be involved in this case?
(Objective 13-9 and 13-12)
2. What samples should be collected and how should they
be processed for transporting to the laboratory? (Objective
13-4)
3. How is this ectoparasite transmitted from person to
person? (Objective 13-6)
4. What type of treatment is involved and what type of
isolation, if any, should be in place? (Objective 13-10)
