CHAPTER 13 The Arthropods

Treatment

There are several prescription creams and lotions

that can be used to treat mite infestations. It is

also important to clean and disinfect clothing,

bedding, and towels thoroughly by washing in

hot water and drying in a hot clothes dryer.

Prevention and Control

Prevention and control are usually a concern

after the fact. Because mites are ubiquitous, it is

almost impossible to prevent contact unless there

is an individual who is known to be infested. The

focus is to prevent the spread to unaffected individuals

and to prevent reinfestation of the initial

case. This includes making sure that all clothing,

bedding, and towels are washed in hot water and

dried in a hot clothes dryer. If clothes cannot be

washed right away, placing them in a plastic bag

will prevent mites from spreading and finding

another meal source. They will die within a few

weeks without feeding, but this method should

not be relied on to prevent their spread.

Spiders

Morphology

Most people easily recognize the typical spider

morphology (Fig. 13-6; Table 13-3). Spiders are

found worldwide but only a few inflict damage

through a venomous bite. The three species that

may be found in the United States include the

black widow (Latrodectus mactans), brown

recluse (Loxosceles reclusa), and hobo (Tegenaria

agrestis) spiders. The black widow spider is

so-named because it is the female with the venomous

bite who may kill the male after mating.

Both male and female black widow spiders have

a shiny black surface. The female is larger than

the male and has the diagnostic red hourglass

shape on the underside of her abdomen. Their

webs are described as atypical or chaotic because

The typically mite evolves from eggs to adults in this

time frame. (Objective 13-6)

A. 2 days

B. 2 weeks

C. 2 months

D. 2 years
