Glossary

undulating membrane Finlike structure connected

to the outer edge of some flagellates; aids

in the organism’s locomotion, moving in a wavelike

pattern.

unembryonated Unfertilized.

unfixed Refers to specimens that do not contain

added preservatives.

uta Refers to mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in the

Peruvian Andes.

vector (pl., vectors) Living carrier (e.g., an arthropod)

responsible for transporting a parasite from

an infected host to a noninfected host.

vertical transmission Process whereby some

arthropods transmit the microorganism they

carry to their offspring.

viscera Soft parts and internal organs of the major

cavities in the body.

visceral Pertaining to the internal organs of the

body, especially the liver, spleen, and lymph

nodes; also may be referred to a systemic

infection.

Winterbottom’s sign Enlargement of the postcervical

chain of lymph nodes related to trypanosomal

infections.

xenodiagnosis A procedure, primarily performed

in areas of the world with little, if any, means for

parasite identification, in which a noninfected

reduviid bug is allowed to feed on a person suspected

of having Chagas’ disease; feces from the

bug is then examined several weeks later for the

presence of trypomastigotes.

Ziemann’s dot (pl., dots) A fine dustlike dot

that stain pale pink and is seen in the cytoplasm

of heavily stained RBCs infected with Plasmodium

malariae; also known as Ziemann’s

stippling.

zoonosis (pl., zoonoses) Accidental human infection

with a parasite whose normal host is an

animal. As a result, completion of the parasite

life cycle may or may not occur; also referred as

a zoonotic occurrence.

zoonotic Parasitic disease that normally infects

animals and that may also infect humans; also

known as a zoonosis.

zygote (pl., zygotes) Fertilized cell, the product

of the union of a male and female sex cell; also

known as an ookinete.

zymodeme analysis Procedure used to diagnose

and identify parasitic infections that involves the

study of isoenzyme patterns of an organism.
