Varieties listed with value for cultivation and use
Varieties under this category were trialled for three years (cereals, winter rape, perennial
forage plants) or two years (all other species) in value tests performed by the
Federal Plant Variety Offi ce. Providing evidence of signifi cant improvement compared
In Germany the federal states are in charge of variety testing for advice and recommendation
to the farmer. After acceptance the new varieties are included in the variety
trials done by the federal states to fi nd out which of the listed varieties compete best in
the different German regions and can be recommended.
The results of all German variety trials are transmitted regularly to the Federal Plant
Variety Offi ce and form the basis for the Descriptive Variety List which is issued yearly.
Varieties listed in the common catalogue of the European Union
Varieties under this category are not listed in Germany but have been accepted for the
national list of another EU member state on basis of a given agricultural value. Being
listed on the common catalogue of the European Union (EU-varieties) they can be
marketed in Germany. Sometimes EU-varieties gain a certain importance in Germany.
In case there are suffi cient results from offi cial German trials those varieties are taken
into the Descriptive Variety List to give the consumer a better view on the varieties
offered.
